I will start off by admitting up front that this is my own opinion. If you want someone to tell you how, or what to think, feel or believe, you’re barking up the wrong tree. I *WANT* you to disagree with my viewpoint!!! I *WANT* you to tell me I’m wrong. That tells me this is still America, LAND OF THE FREE, HOME OF THE BRAVE….
But please don’t … don’t, don’t DON’T….. label me a racist, a bigot, a hater, or anything else, simply for the fact that … I disagree with the location of the Park 51 project! I am NOT a bigot. I don’t go burning down mosques. I don’t trample anyone’s freedom of religion. I don’t burn anyone’s sacred texts. Nor do I threaten to kill those who do as much to me.
Have we completely gone haywire, with the book burnings and the building burnings and the death threats, the pandemonium threatening to ensue, etc? Why are we meeting the very real threat of Islamization with our own Americanized version of Nazi Germany? STOP, People, and listen…
Why all the trumping, why all the one-upsmanship? And why all of the noises that our government is making toward tolerance? They were mighty quick to blame Al-Qaeda for 9/11. What makes them think that, nine years down the road, a mosque going up on the site is going to take away the pain?
There must be an understanding. For people who are now 20 and up, that understanding has already been written in blood. For younger people, I took the liberty of presenting them materials on 9/11 in their full scope of horror. Flames, people jumping, people being crushed, and so on. Why did I do this?
I did it because you can not sanitize history and expect to learn anything from it. You cannot pick and choose which historical facts you will teach and which ones you will withhold and expect anything sensical to stick in the public’s mind. For example, you cannot give an accurate account of the Vietnam war simply by presenting a bulleted lists of battles and expecting a child to pick anything up from it. Much of the older generation of today are living witnesses to what this war was about; and most know there is more to Jane Fonda than her fitness videos. It is these living testaments where you will find the most colorful and complete accurate version of history.
It is now into the tenth year since the Sept 11 attacks. And now this mosque business. In my opinion, they are once again trying to sanitize history. “Islam is a religion of peace” crying for “religious tolerance” and “When will Muslims be accepted?” It’s “too soon”. Damn right its Too Soon. You see, many many of the people who were witness to the attacks are still alive today. And they know better than to buy the argument that 9/11 or Ground Zero should be in anyway “sanitized”. Least of all with a 13 story community center titled “Cordoba House”.
You can fool a few of the people some of the time. You can fool most of the people most of the time, but you cannot fool ALL of the people ALL of the time. And that is what I feel incumbent on me to point out. I also feel it incumbent upon me to say NO ONE is telling these people NOT to build a mosque ANYWHERE. They are just saying “Build it anywhere other than on Ground Zero”. Have some respect. It’s a two way street.
The only way for us all to settle down is if there is mutual respect. We respect them, they respect us. That is the ONLY WAY to go about it. You cannot sanitize history — but you CAN foster and write new history based on mutual respect.
In the meantime, we’ve stopped with the book burnings. Will they stop with the building projects on hallowed ground?
