White lies don’t really hurt anyone. If anything they avoid us from sticking our foot in our mouth or getting tangled into some sticky situations. Some lies are more hurtful than others and they often leave us wondering why people tell lies in the first place. Consider the following reasons.
Reasons People Tell Lies: To Avoid Consequences
Anytime a person resorts to dishonesty it may be because he or she is avoiding the consequences at hand. A person may lie to their significant other when they are cheating because they know if their boyfriend or girlfriend were to find out there would be hell to pay. It is also one of the biggest reasons children tell lies. They know when they’ve committed a wrong action, so they try to cover it up with a lie.
Reasons People Tell Lies: To Manipulate
Sometimes a person may deceive others in order to manipulate a situation to their liking. For instance, a friend A might tell friend C that friend B said something really nasty about them. It may be untrue, but perhaps friend A has a personal agenda in mind.
Reasons People Tell Lies: To Avoid Being Embarrassed
One of the biggest reasons people tell lies is to avoid feeling humiliated. At hospitals many patients lie when it comes to some of the personal questions the medical doctor asks. For example, a woman who has had a lot of sexual partners may lie to her gynecologist in order to avoid feeling judged. An individual will lie to defend their reputation and personal dignity.
Reasons People Tell Lies: To Impress Others
Some people fall into the habit of lying habitually simply to impress others. Usually they will fabricate lies to people they do not even know very well in order to really feel as if they are impressing that person. When I was younger every time my friend and I went to parties she would tell boys who approached her that she went to Arizona State University when in fact we were just seniors in high school. It was strange, but she had major insecurity issues.
Reasons People Tell Lies: Fear
Fear is one of the main reasons people will continue to spew out untruths. Fear is a huge motivator for people to just pent up their feelings and keep them locked up. Someone may be afraid to tell someone the truth because they fear losing a friendship or relationship. They may be afraid of being alone. Maybe they also continue to be dishonest because they are afraid that others will not accept them for who they are.
