Eighteen cities are being considered for the 2022 FIFA world cup, including Los Angeles, Ca. As a resident of Los Angeles County for the majority of my life, I think Los Angeles would be a great location for a future World Cup.
Los Angeles is not a stranger to hosting big sporting events. It was the site for the Olympics in both 1932 and 1984. In addition, Los Angeles was host to the 1994 World Cup. In 1994, I was unable to go to an actual game but really enjoyed the soccer spirit the game brought to Los Angeles. If Los Angeles wins the bid for 2022, I won’t be missing a chance to see the USA play on their home turf.
Tons to Do
Los Angeles has spectacular restaurants, museums, nightlife and attractions. When spectators are not watching a game, they can head down to the beach, grab a bite or check out fun attractions like Universal Studios. Los Angeles is home to the entertainment industry so there is always a movie premiere or celebrities to see. Take it from this LA resident, there is tons to do in this huge city.
As the largest city in California and the second-largest city in the nation, Los Angeles certainly has the square footage needed for a big event like this. In 1994, Los Angeles hosted eight of the World Cup matches. The games were played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. In addition, there are many hotels to accommodate guests flying in to see the games. Also, there is no shortage of sports bars where fans can cheer on their favorite team.
Boost for the Economy
With an unemployment rate of over 12 percent, Los Angeles’ economy could use a boost. Hopefully, by 2022, the economy will have improved. However, big sporting events typically boost the economy. Along with the creation of temporary jobs, businesses in the surrounding area will get more foot traffic.
Soccer is a sport played all over the world. It is a sport played by both developed and developing countries. For this reason, the World Cup should be held somewhere where diversity is represented. Los Angeles is a diverse city, where many languages are spoken and there are frequent cultural celebrations.
It’s a Beautiful Game
Soccer is said to be not as popular in The United States as other games. Perhaps, this is so. Yet, this soccer fan thinks soccer is a beautiful game. How can soccer ever be popular in America if it is not embraced and if major games are not held in the states? So come on FIFA, please pick Los Angeles to host the World Cup.
