Few games have excited me as much as DC Universe Online. It is an upcoming MM0RPG for the Playstation 3 and PC. It is being produced by Sony Entertainment Online, and lately has had a mixed bag of good news and bad news. Unfortunately, the game has recently been pushed back to next year. However, if you pre-order, you will be allowed into the beta testing. Video game nerds the world over enjoy beta versions of games, but I must admit I would rather have the game than a beta in a month.
The game, for the uninitiated, is based on the DC comics universe. I have been a fan since I was a kid watching “Superfriends.” These characters have been some of my closest friends over the years. The chance to literally join their universe has long been a fantasy of mine.
The backstory of the game is that Brainiac, one of the great DC enemies, has stolen powers from metahumans, and now the powers have flooded the world. You get the chance to create a character who has gained powers as a result of Brainiac’s transgressions. You then decide if you will go light side or dark side. Once you make this important choice, you get to one of my favorite parts of the game. You get to choose who you want your mentor to be. It wouldn’t be safe to have someone with the powers of Superman flying around untrained. If you chose to be a hero, you can follow Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman to save the world. On the other hand, if you chose to be a villain, you follow the Joker, Lex Luthor, or Cheetah (one of Wonder Woman’s classic villains). You then travel the DCU, visit locations like Metropolis, the Hall of Doom, and Gotham, and fight for your chosen side of the other.
Obviously, if you buy the PS 3 version, you will have all that you need from day 1 to play. If you buy the PC version, like I plan to, you will need to make sure your system meets certain specs. These haven’t been released yet. However, those of you not familiar with MMORPGs need to realize they come with two types of cost. One is the initial cost of the game itself. If you buy the PC version, the game will be $49.99 and if you opt for the PS 3, it will cost $59.99. On top of that though, MMORPs come with a monthly cost to play, which currently is estimated at $15 a month. This is your membership fee, allowing you onto the servers.
The game is just what a fan of DC comics needs. You get the chance to see some of your favorite characters, like Green Lantern, Powergirl, and Brainiac flying around and fighting for control of all reality. It features a backstory, in part penned by Geoff Johns, probably the most sought after writer in comics today. Character designs are based on work by Jim Lee, currently one of the Big 2 in charge of the entire DC universe and the leader of their online work now. The game looks incredibly good right now and with the beta on its way, it can only (hopefully) get better. The game is currently due February 15, according to Gamestop.
