Wickliffe Floral is a family owned Mom and Pop operation that is a rare commodity these days. Known for their exquisite wedding arrangements, bouquets, and corsages, they will be celebrating their 90th Anniversary in 2011 and going strong. The owners and employees at Wickliffe Floral have faith in their product, and it shows in the quality of their work and the way they treat their customers.
“Wickliffe Floral creates a Norman Rockwell feel for me,” says Cindy Joy. “The owners and staff make everyone feel like family. It makes you want to come back again and again.” With today’s market more competitive than ever, it’s tough to compete with the large chain stores. That’s where quality and service come in. “We have been riding out the storm for decades, and we’re still here!” says Audra Adaire, office manager, part-time designer, family member. “My favorite of what we do here at Wickliffe Floral is the weddings. People come in and say, ‘You did my mother and father’s wedding. We want you to do ours.’ Weddings have always been a Wickliffe Floral specialty. We custom design each wedding.”
What all do you do for weddings? “We do whatever the bride needs. We design the flower arrangements, the bouquets, the boutonnières and corsages. We can help set up, we decorate the halls and the churches. We can assist the men with their boutonnière; help the women, whatever the bride needs and wants.”
As with any florist, there are weddings and there are funerals. “We all cried when one of our customers came in to arrange for her husband’s funeral. We had done her wedding forty years ago, and her husband always bought her flowers every year for their anniversary. He was such a gentleman,” Audra said, and sighed. “We did his wife’s funeral a few years later. She loved angels. I remember that.”
“The store is a gathering place,” says John Jr. “Wickliffe Floral is like going home to me,” Hedy Kramar says. “I go see my brother every weekend for a cup of coffee and catch up on the weekly events and how things are going. I love Wickliffe Floral.”
How confident are you for the Holiday season? “We are hopeful but realistic,” Audra says. “We know that people are struggling. Income is down and many people are without jobs. We will have many arrangements that are priced affordably to help in that regard. We offer a beautiful $25 arrangement that helps out tremendously when sending a get well to a hospital or when sending a pick-me-up to a friend. Even though a lot of our customers are hurting financially, they still care and want to send people flowers. It is touching, really.”
Do you sell cut Christmas trees ? “Yes, we have sold Christmas trees for as long as anyone working here can remember. And we buy locally. It’s like Christmas the day the trees arrive.”
Are Holidays a good time for your business? People are in the giving spirit around the Holidays. Flower arrangements , fruit baskets and Centerpieces are a great gift idea for the host of the family dinner, or an older person who really doesn’t need any more ‘stuff’ but loves that Holiday cheer, or for people out of town, or for people who no longer put up a tree.”
What do you expect to be your biggest selling items this Christmas season? “Our own designer’s Centerpieces with candles are always popular, wreaths too, for decorating homes and the cemeteries. And as always Poinsettia’s, whether they are big or small, are a favorite. You haven’t had a poinsettia until you buy one from Wickliffe Floral. They come with foil and glitter and bows! They’re beautiful! Another popular item each year is the Teleflora Thomas Kinkade arrangements. We have many customers anxious to collect the latest Kinkade figurine each Christmas.”
Is Wickliffe Floral involved in the community? “Yes, most definitely. We have been a USO drop off for the past six years. Plus we participated in and donated many items to the Deepwood Foundation’s annual event and are currently a part of the Coat Drive held by the Wickliffe High School Honor Students. We have been a monthly contributor to the Ripe for Harvest, helping children in Costa Rica with education and care. That is very important to us, to give back to the community and others.”
So, aside from flowers and trees and Thomas Kinkade figurines, what else do you sell at Wickliffe Floral? We have a large assortment of candles, religious figurines, silk arrangements, planters, plush animals, greeting cards, knick knacks, books, baby gifts, fine chocolates, vases of all kinds. We are not just a florist, we are a gift shop too.”
