If you has not heard the news the FDA is looking to catch up with other countries in how cigarettes are labeled. It seems that many feel the current warning labels are just not effective enough. The solution may work to deter some, but how will it affect teens. Many teens start smoking very early usually about their freshman year in high school for some. The result is that they become adults who are addicted to smoking. Kids are taught from the time they start elementary school the dangers which are associated with smoking. Still many do it anyway.
For some teens this may be learned behavior. If they are around others who smoke it may seem as normal as drinking a cup of coffee to them. For others they see smoking as an outlet for their stress. It really is no secret that many teens today are under a lot of pressure to succeed. When you take the time to think about it, would a larger warning label really deter them? When most kids go into a store how many of them actually stop, and read the label? Sure they may glance at it, but is any of it sinking in.
Bigger labels on cigarettes does in fact seem like an idea that has been long overdue, but there are other things that have to be done to deter teens
Help the find a stress outlet
First and, foremost children need to learn when they are in elementary school how to deal with their stress. If this is done when they are young they may not look to cigarettes as an outlet when they are older. There are really many different things that you can do in order to help young children deal with stress, the key is to find the necessary resources.
Don’t just tell them show them
Sometimes when children read things in a book it just does not seem real enough to them. Even a video may not really get the point across. If you are a teacher or, a parent, you may be able to arrange for several speakers to come in and talk about their own personal experiences. Many people who are presently suffering because of the damage that smoking has caused them over the years are happy to speak with students to prevent them from doing the same. Seeing the affects that smoking has on people can really help things to sink in.
