Reggie Bush scandal still continues after five (5) years of receiving the award. According to ESPN, the Heisman Trophy Trust is expecting to take away the award based on information from the NCAA. The NCAA stated that Reggie Bush received gifts and money from sports agents in hope that he would sign with them before going into the NFL. According to the NCAA, Bush’s family had a rent-free home and had a limousine and a new suit from the agents for his acceptance of the Heisman Trophy.
For now Reggie Bush still holds the Heisman trophy for 2005. However, the Heisman Trust may decide to strip him of the award. It would be the first time in history that someone had the Heisman taken from them after the fact.
Hopefully, if the NCAA allegations are true-Bush comes out and offers to give back the trophy because he took inappropriate benefits while being a college athlete. Then the other side of the fence you must consider is just how much money did the University of Southern California make off of Reggie Bush’s playing career? USC sold Bush’s jersey and other collectible and none of that money was ever paid to Bush. You could see why an athlete would be tempted to take items and money from agents.
Furthermore, college athletes are getting a free education even if the school is making money from their stardom. Another thing is that most college athletes never make it as a professional so there’s no real guarantee of any money in the future and that’s probably why Bush jumped at the benefits offered to him.
The separation between student athlete and a future professional is very controversial because if you’re a star every agent will be trying to get you to obtain their services with hopes of a future payoff when you make it as professional.
Good luck to Reggie Bush-hopefully, he’ll offer to give back the Heisman to save a lot of news media regarding his college career. He’ll be collecting nice paychecks playing in the NFL anyway.
