William Martinez was a matinee idol of the 80’s. Known as the love team mate of Diamond Star, Maricel Soriano, he was one of the first Regal babies. That was how Mother Lily Monteverde branded her stars, the matriarch of the Regal Films. His movies with Maria were able to bring out his best in comedy. His equally talented and good-looking elder brother, Albert, was also a peer in the Regal family. His contemporaries in Regal other than Albert were Dina Bonnevie, Gabby Concepcion, Snooky Serna and the late Alfie Anido. All of them are popular names already in the industry.
William is known for his being funny and wackiness. So,because of that, I remember that he was called Kulet in the movie talk shows during those times, especially the See True of the late Inday Badiday. I think, the most unforgettable movie he made was the “Bagets,” where he starred with talented young stars of the time like Herbert Bautista, Aga Muhlach, JC Bonnin, Raymond Lauchengco, Eula Valdez, Yayo Aguila, and Jobelle Salvador. It is about the issues of adolescent lives like identity crisis, generation gap and first loves. The IMdb.com revealed that the story was an original idea of William himself and Alona Alegre. The web site said that Mother Lily refused the story so, William offered it to Vic del Rosario of Viva Films. He accepted the idea with a condition that William would be one of the cast. The rest was history. It was a hit teen movie of all time. It was in that movie where a relationship blossomed between William and Yayo. Eventually, they eloped and developed a family.
Last November 22,2010, William complained of severe headache. For that, he was rushed to the St.Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. The ABS CBN News Update told that he is at stable condition in the intensive care unit. The family is still waiting for the outcome of series of laboratory tests. We could remember that he was last seen in Aga Muhlach and Ai Ai delas Alas’ weekend night comedy show, M3 (Malay Mo Madevelop, in English, Who Knows Feelings Might Develop), last Saturday as Bart, who wanted to sabotage MJ’s business. MJ is Aga, a brokenhearted handsome businessman in his late 30’s, who believes that women always leave the men in his family.
William was a good family man, according to Yayo. I remember her always telling the movie reporters how a good provider he was. They lived in the United States in the early years of their marriage. They parted ways only last year, according to what Yayo said during an interview in the Channel 5’s Paparazzi episode last July 11. According to Yayo, the reason was that she thought that they needed space. Somehow, she fell out of love. There was no involved third party. Definitely, they remain one of the admired people in the Philippine movies. It is Yayo, however, who is updating the press on the condition of his husband.
