Willow Smith – what do you think. Is she just a fashion loving little girl having fun in the grown ups world? Or is she the real life dress up doll of a fashion obsessed mother? I for one find myself troubled by this very self assured, grown up looking, nine year old girl.
Willow is just nine year olds, but could easily pass for the teenage sister of Rihanna. She has been dressed head to toe in designer gear whilst sitting on the front row at Milan Fashion week, watching a whole range of shows from D&G to Salvatore Ferragamo. She has been pictured in the company of key fashionista’s and designers, whilst holding a vast array of clutch bags and sporting fierce fashion forward hairstyles. Fashion magazines like Grazia and Look have fallen over themselves to describe her as a new style crush, and ‘one to watch’. Yet she is just a nine year old girl who surely should be in the company of friends of her own age, wearing age appropriate outfits?
Willow is obviously in love with fashion. As a young girl I used to trawl over my mom’s catologues and fashion mags, cutting out pictures for my scrap book. And I loved my weekly shopping trips each Saturday. That’s fairly natural, most little girls do. But Willow seems to go far beyond this. She wears very cutting edge fashions that seem totally inappropriate and much too old for such a young girl. These include graphic prints, leopard prints and the already mentioned clutch bags. What does such a young gitl keep in her clutch bag – an i-phone and contacts book?
And I feel troubled that she is so obviously in the public eye. Celebrity children have a nasty habit of falling by the wayside – Michael Douglas, Anna Nicole Smith and Vidal Sassoon are just three celebrities whose children battled drug and alcohol problems whilst living in their parents shadow. Maybe Willow will be different, but if her father was plain William Jones form Nowheresville, who would be interested in this rather precocious child in outlandish clothing? It seems that rather than protect their children, giving them some opportunity to live their lives with some semblance of privacy, allowing them to make their own choices about celebrity when they are old and mature enough to do this, Will and Jada Pinkert Smith seem happy to allow both their children to be in the spotlight, in films and music and public appearances.Maybe Willow will grow up to be a fully rounded fashionista with a vibrant and successful career – I certainly hope so. Will and Jada seem to love their children, and want to support them in all they do. I just hope that the pressures of fame haven’t come to early for this little girl?
