As of yesterday, McDonald’s wildly popular “Monopoly” has launched for 2010. This year, the game features the usual, more familiar prizes, like the $1,000,000 jackpot and the free McDonald’s food, as well as newer prizes like spa visits and a 2011 Ford Edge Sport. Play at McD.com has a downloadable game board, which will give you a place for all those game pieces you just know you’ll be collecting.
I make a vow to myself every year that I’m not going to fall for McDonald’s ploys and play this game again. I never win anything but free food, and I’m not much of a McDonald’s fan – gasp! – but I end up collecting those little Monopoly pieces anyway. Against my will, I swear.
This year, I can conveniently place the blame for my renewed obsession at this assignment’s feet. Which is nice. Keeps me from having to look elsewhere. Looking over the game board online yesterday, there were a few prizes I’m coveting this time around. There’s the usual cash prizes, which none of us are going to turn down, right? But there’s also a spa trip and a beach resort vacation that I guess I’ll settle for – if I have to, of course.
As usual, the rarest pieces will be those little blue “Park Place” and “Boardwalk” monsters, the ones that will get you the $1,000,000. One will be easy to find, usually “Park Place” in my experience, to build up your sense of false hope that you’ll win the big bucks. The smaller prizes are much more likely, and McDonald’s claims that your chances to win are “1 in 4” this year, supposedly the best they’ve ever been. Which means you’ll be winning a lot of small fries, my friend.
My strategy for winning bigger stuff is simple – use your friends mercilessly. Family’s good too. Put together an informal swapping group. Make especially sure that you arm-wrestle those friends who are hardcore McDonald-ites into your group. The bulk of your haul will come from them, so make sure you’re on good terms throughout the contest. Buy them some McDonald’s gift certificates, take them to a movie. You’ll never be sorry.
You can play online this year as well. A quick look at the fine print that includes the game rules reveals a free code that can be used to enter the online sweepstakes. It gives you one more chance at the $1,000,000, so you can bet I’ll be doing it. You can also send McDonald’s a SASE to get game pieces by mail. Whichever way or ways that you choose to play, have fun. And remember to tell me which pieces you’d be willing to part with. I have a vacation to win.
