When people think of working for a major movie production company, they think of being an actor, director, producer, or anybody that has access to the movie set or big company buildings. Most of the time, these are the type of positions that are known. However, there are people who are not officially hired by the company, but they would still be considered as workers for the company because they produce publicity.
This happens when a company either is first promoting a movie or shows by a major movie production company or is releasing them on DVD. Of course, sometimes the movies are not as recognizable as currently released movies, but they are often wanted by a fan base.
Usually a person that is known for spreading the word about movies being released on DVDs is known as a press correspondent. I work as a press correspondent for Shout! Factory. While Shout! Factory is not a major movie production company, they release movies from years past serving to the fans who enjoy movies that are now known as “cult,” “retro,” or “pop culture.”
While I am not part of the group that works on getting rights for the movies to be released, I often get word about a movie or a show that is wanted or that is mentioned, but Shout! Factory does not have the rights to release the movie on DVD or to market it.
As a press correspondent, I look for people who will want the movie that is going to be released. When I get a press release that states that the movie is going to be released, if I know any people that are interested in the movie, I make sure to write an article about the release and make sure that it is passed to the people who will like the movie.
While I am not directly hired by Shout! Factory, I do consider myself somebody that works for them because I often get DVDs to review and I write about the releases, so I do get something from them.
It may not sound exciting, but this type of work can also lead to interviews with celebrities. These are exciting and often rare.
Major movie production companies always need to promote their new movies and press correspondents are people that help them get the job done. In fact, they may even hire some of their own press correspondents.
