A metal yardstick can become a beautiful décor piece in a hurry and that décor is interchangeable! Any time you want, you can take down the old, and put up the new in just a minute. That means you can use the unusual yardstick décor to decorate for a holiday, a particular season, or any regular day!
Paint a metal yardstick to be any color you want. The paint job will last much longer if you use paints made especially for metal. Use the side that shows the measurements against the wall and the other side – after it’s painted – as the right side. Screw or nail the yardstick on a wall and make sure it’s level.
Create any message you want by using wooden shapes. You’ll find assorted shapes, in various sizes, colors and thicknesses, at most any craft store. Create a simplistic version by using flat, thin, geometric shapes, like circles or squares, or more exciting shapes, like pets and sports-theme wood pieces. Make something a little more substantial by purchasing small shapes of wood that are much thicker.
Make a letter on each wooden plaque by using paint, markers, stickers, rubber-stamping methods, rub-on appliques or other techniques. Use stencils or draw freehand. Or, cut letter shapes from fabric and glue them to the wood pieces.
Create words that say “Noel”, “Peace”, “Family”, “Thanks”, “Bath” or other choices to create the yardstick banner you want. You can spell out a child’s name using one letter on each wooden piece. This technique makes a beautiful arrangement for a nursery or young girl’s room.
After creating each letter plaque, fold a wide ribbon in half, then glue the fold to the backside of the frame, in the center, near the top. Leave the ends long and tie a bow at the ends. Make different arrangements by using a different color of ribbon on each plaque or by giving each plaque a different length of ribbon. You don’t even have to make letters for the plaques if you don’t want. Create a different arrangement that shows off a picture of a lighthouse or even a photo of one of your kids on each plaque. There are many different designs you can do.
Place a button magnet on the metal yardstick for each letter. Simply hang one plaque on each magnet to display. Make assorted plaques, and anytime you want, just take down the old ones and hang up the new! It’s a lovely way to decorate in nearly any room of the house!
