Every Tuesday night at ten, my husband and I make a run for the living room. It’s time for our Chopped date! Chopped is a Food Network competition show that is sure to grab your interest.
The premise of the show is to compete against three other chefs using mystery ingredients to create dishes. Sounds simple enough, but it quickly turns into a challenge. Each round one chef is “chopped,” or eliminated from the competition. The first round is appetizer, in which each competitor is allotted twenty minutes. The next two rounds, entree and dessert, consist of thirty minutes time. The time makes the competition difficult enough, but the real roadblock is the mystery ingredients.
The mystery ingredients can be any combination of edible things, and believe me, they think of everything! Oftentimes, the host will have to explain to the audience what an ingredient is because it is so uncommonly used. There are three to four mystery ingredients per round, and chefs have to use each ingredient in a prominent place on their dish. They are also expected to use it in a creative way.
There are several things to draw your attention to Chopped. The main draw is the competition. At the beginning of the show, they give you a little background on each of the chefs. This brings an attachment to the chefs, so you begin to care about their fate. Then you are drawn into the heat of battle as the chefs compete to win the $10000 prize and the honor of being declared Chopped Champ.
Another draw is the mystery ingredients. Even the most beginning chefs will find their attention captured by the mystery ingredients. As the chefs get to work, you find yourself trying to figure out how you would use the ingredients. You come up with your own combination of ingredients to make a dish. You find yourself wishing you could try it out!
Chopped will be sure to be an entertaining hour for you and your family. Flip on Food Network Tuesday nights at ten and give it a shot. Before you know it, you may have your own Chopped date Tuesdays!
