YouTube legend Fred has a Nickelodeon movie coming out. September 18, 2010, is the date that Fred the Movie will premiere on the children’s programming network as Fred gets on a city bus to find his girlfriend. Helping him will be Fred’s next door neighbor played by iCarly’s Jennette McCurdy.
Fred is played by Lucas Cruikshank, and his Fred videos receive upwards of a million to ten million hits on YouTube with every video he makes. Cruikshank alters his voice to sound high pitched and gets into all kinds of messy, weird, and downright funny situations.
Fred began as a project to make fun of people who blog about anything and everything and has now grown into legendary status as one of YouTube’s most endearing characters and also one way that YouTube can be a successful medium for independent filmmakers such as Cruikshank and his character Fred.
Fred has been around since 2006 when YouTube wasn’t nearly as popular. Fred, whose last name is Figgelhorn, is a six year old boy even though he’s played by a teenager. To date there are dozens of Fred videos that last anywhere between a minute and a half to four minutes. His most recent one is a reminder “don’t forget to brush” in a music video format.
Fred Figglehorn is a true YouTube legend in every sense of the word. Lucas Cruikshank has made a name for himself that otherwise would be impossible without the internet and YouTube itself. If I could bottle half of his creative energy I would be set for the next twenty years of creative writing.
Hopefully Fred the Movie will get high ratings. Nickelodeon has been a disappointment to me ever since they botched the live action adaptation of their beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series. Hopefully they have done Fred Figgelhorn the justice.
