Just days after Zahra Baker’s remains were confirmed, her father Adam Baker, is claiming that he had nothing to do with his daughters death and that he could never have hurt his baby. ZAhra’s body had been dismembered.
Adam Baker claims, “There’s no way in the world I would hurt my daughter.” The evidence in the case that has been made public begs to differ.
10 year old Zahra Baker was reported missing on October 9, 2010. He claimed in the 911 call that he had last seen his daughter at 2:30am. Then there was a mysterious fire in his back yard and he had to call the fire department to put it out. He claims that he did not check on his daughter after the fire. Later police found a fake ransom note to the boss of Adam Baker. They checked on the man and his daughter at their home, they were fine. Elisa Baker, Zahra’s stepmother, later admitted to writing the phony note.
Police have recovered evidence in the investigation that they believe proves that evidence was thrown out weeks before October 9, 2010. No one other than Adam and Elisa Baker saw Zahra after September 25, 2010.
Zahra Baker was a bone cancer survivor with a prosthetic leg and two hearing aids. She moved from Australia with her father less than two years ago after her father married Elisa Baker of North Carolina.
Neighbors and friends reported that Elisa was abusive towards Zahra and the family moved often. After their latest move, Elisa told neighbors that she was home schooling Zahra, but their are not records to indicate it was actually happening. The school district did not follow through on her absence.
Neighbors and family members reported the abuse to social services after they personally witnessed Elisa beating Zahra. Social services cannot comment on this private matter, but obviously they did not do anything in time to save her life.
Adam and Elisa Baker are both due in court on Thursday. Elisa Baker has been in jail since October on obstruction of justice charges stemming from her forgery of the note and lying about Zahra’s whereabouts. Zahra Baker’s remains were eventually found after Elisa Baker led police to several locations to gather evidence.
Adam Baker was arrested on unrelated charges and then released on bond.
Zahra’s biological mother, Emily Dietrich, has not seen her daughter since she was 8 months old. She gave Adam full custody because she has post partum depression. She had been searching for Adam and Zahra and fighting to regain custody. Just three days before Zahra was reported missing, Ms. Dietrich found the pair living in North Carolina.
