The search for ten-year old, Australia-born, Zahra Baker has ended in tragedy. Police in Hickory, N.C. have found enough physical evidence that match Zahra’s DNA.
The story of Zahra’s short life is disturbing and the most horrifying details have yet to come out. Although Zahra’s father called 911 to report her missing on October 9, no one other than her father, Adam Baker and his wife Elisa, Zahra’s step-mother have seen the child since September 25th.
When Adam Baker spoke with a 911 operator on October 9, his tone was noted as unusually calm and the conversation strange as compared to one who just discovered their daughter missing. Mr. Baker was later arrested on charges not related to his daughter’s disappearance. He has since been released on bail.
Suspicions surrounding her step-mother, Elisa Baker have existed from the beginning when she admitted that she penned the ransom note found shortly after Zahra was reported missing. Since that time, Elisa Baker has been held in custody for obstruction of justice.
Just from what we know, Zahra Baker, in her short ten-year life has encountered and overcome more than many will in a normal life-time. Born in Wagga Wagga, Australia, Zahra’s mother, Emily Dietrich suffered from post-partum depression and allowed Zahra’s father to take her shortly after her birth; a decision of sore regret. Bone cancer left little Zahra with only one leg and hearing loss as a result of treatments.
Zahra’s father moved to Hickory, N.C. after deciding to marry Elisa, who he met online. According to relatives and neighbors, Elisa was cruel and abusive to Zahra. However, Elisa claims in jailhouse letters that she found Zahra dead and then her father Adam Baker did something horrifying to her body. At the beginning of the search, cadaver dogs hit on an area where a wood chipper was located.
As more tests are performed and authorities continue to gather evidence, we can expect a complete analysis of Zahra’s final hours in days to come.
