The Zenyatta Breeders Cup 2010 run was hyped to no end. But eventually, the Zenyatta Breeders Cup 2010 results actually had to be formed, and back up all of that hype. With all the talk about an undefeated career, some may have forgotten that she actually had to win her 20’th race. To do it today, she had to overcome a stacked field, and her closest competitors for Horse of the Year. Yet when the Zenyatta Breeders Cup race finally started, she ran her usual formula to a t – with one glaring difference at the end.
Anyone who watched and rewatched the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic wasn’t surprised at how this year’s contest started. Like before, the undefeated filly was dead last from the start, and was far behind the rest of the field. Any other horse would be counted out after a start like that, but this isn’t a normal horse.
The Zenyatta Breeders Cup 2010 race really started at the final turn, when she finally made her move up on the outside. Yet Blame, one of the other favorites and Horse of the Year contenders, was holding on to the lead. However, it seemed inevitable that he would drop short, like 19 others before him.
But a funny thing happened at the end – in that Zenyatta ran out of time. When she and Blame came to the finish line, Blame was still a head in front. Therefore, the inevitable did not happen after all, and another classic comeback was not in the cards.
Horse racing’s undefeated crown jewel had finally fallen, by the narrowest of margins. Everything else about the Zenyatta Breeders Cup 2010 results were just like normal, down to the poor start and huge comeback. It appeared that she started a bit too late, however, and that Blame had just enough left to survive.
Naturally, perfection was denied at the wire by a horse named Blame, which often happens in races like this. The sport is used to seeing Triple Crowns denied at the last second in the last 30 years, and now a perfect horse has been foiled as well.
At the least, this classic did come down to the wire, and knocked yesterday’s Calvin Borel fight from the spotlight. If the Zenyatta Breeders Cup 2010 results were going to have her first loss, it says something that it was by so little. Although being perfect is something we all strive for, it often comes up just a few inches short.
While the story of the Breeders Cup 2010 is Zenyatta, Blame walks off with $5 million, a likely Horse of the Year victory – and many puns to be made on his name. Fly Down got the third place spot, while Lookin At Lucky trailed in fourth.
