The organization Save NYC Libraries staged a march across the Brooklyn Bridge to protest new cuts in library budgets. “More libraries, more brains,” the group croaked, decked out on full zombie make-up and attire.
The group converged on Cadman Plaza early Halloween morning with some members rising out from a coffin hoisted from the back of hearse.
The clever protest included signs that read “We’re librarians and we’re here for your brainsss,” “more books, more brains,” and “better undead than unread.”
The group sited the Bloomberg Office’s projection that NYC library budgets will be cut an additional 5.4 percent. Library budgets have already been cut by 20 percent since 2008. The additional cut would likely lead to the closing of NYC libraries on the weekends.
Losing access to public computers and newspapers could hurt many of New York City’s unemployed. Without those resources, many may find it even more difficult to find employment.
