A great way to help your children get to sleep at bed time is to spend 15 or 20 minutes reading with them. It will calm them down as well as advance their reading skills. Here are some of my favorite books to read with my two little girls.
1. Corduroy : by Don Freeman
This is a very cute story about a teddy bear trying to find a home, and finding one with a little girl that loves him. Excellent for children 3 and older. There are also numerous adventures in further Corduroy books.
2. Froggy Plays in the Band : by Jonathan London
One of my 4 year old’s favorites. Froggy learns about musical instruments and playing with others in the band. This is also part of a wonderful series of books about Froggy.
3. Little People – Cars, Trucks, Planes, and Trains : by Nancy L Rindone
This is a very fun Lift-the-Flap book. My 18 month old loves to sit and read this one with me. The story is simple and keeps her attention while she lifts the flaps to discover great little surprises. There is a series of these type of books from Fisher Price and they are all fun.
4. Quack! Quack !: by Roger Priddy
Another favorite of my 18 month old. The big pictures of the animals help her learn about them, and the touch and feel spots are pretty realistic. She also loves to make the sounds for each of the animals.
5. If You Give a Pig a Pancake : by Laura Joffe Numeroff
My 4 year old has adored this book since she was 2. The story is great because “If You Give a Pig a Pancake” you are definitely in for quite a ride. My daughter now loves to read this book to me by following the great illustrations. Also check out “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie” also by Laura Numeroff.
6. Amelia Bedilia’s – First Day of School : by Herman Parish
A recent find for my 4 year old. She absolutely loves Amelia Bedilia’s funny chatter and high speed energy. A really cute story with an adorable ending. The book and the subsequent series of books that follows is based on a younger version of the classic character from my childhood, so that makes it fun as well.
7. Big Girls Use the Potty !: by Andrea Pinnington
An invaluable book for potty training. My four year old really enjoyed reading this book while she was potty training and my 18 month old is starting to enjoy it too, now that she is potty training.
8. Exploring Time with Dora : by Steven Savitsky
A terrific book for learning to tell time. I read the story and my daughter can set the time on the clock. Then she presses the button that corresponds with that page and the book plays more of the story for her. Great fun and educational too.
9. Peekaboo Polar Bear ! : by Gary De La Cour
A great counting book that both of my girls love. The illustrations are a lot of fun and the girls just love to count the animals.
10. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and other favorite bedtime rhymes : by Sanja Rescek
Sometime the oldest stories are the best. I thoroughly enjoy reading these classic rhymes with my kids. They really like to join in also.
I hope you enjoy reading these with your kids as much as I do, I know your kids will love them and have happy and fun dreams every night.
