Actor Michael Douglas has been in the news a lot lately. In August he revealed he has an advanced case of throat cancer and in late September the sequel to Wall Street that Douglas stars in called Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps was released. These are all the movies Michael Douglas has starred in in his career that have grossed over $100 million dollars worldwide.
First a few of notes. The first Wall Street movie starring Douglas, Charlie Sheen and Daryl Hannah and directed by Oliver Stone has not even grossed $44 million dollars to date but Douglas won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Gordon Gekko. Many people do not know that Michael Douglas also won an Academy Award as Best Producer for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest starring Jack Nicholson.
Other notable movies Michael Douglas is in that have not grossed $100 million dollars are The China Syndrome, Romancing the Stone and The Jewel of the Nile. To date Michael Douglas has starred in 31 movies and 12 or 39% of them have made over $100 million dollars worldwide. One hopes he can beat throat cancer and star in more high grossing films in his career.
Fatal Attraction (1987) – $320 million
Fatal Attraction was a huge hit and memorable movie as Glenn Close cooks up the families pet rabbit to get revenge on Michael Douglas for his affair with her.
Black Rain (1989) – $134 million
In the dark action thriller movie Black Rain Michael Douglas plays a tough NYC sergeant who has to escort a Japanese gang member back to Japan and then gets immersed into the Japanese underworld.
The War of the Roses (1989) – $160 million
The War of the Roses re-united Michael Douglas with his co-stars Danny DeVito and Kathleen Turner from the Romancing the Stone movies as Douglas and Turner play a divorcing couple at war in a story told by lawyer DeVito.
Basic Instinct (1992) – $353 million
Basic Instinct became a huge hit due to Sharon Stone’s famous scene in which she uncrosses her legs revealing she is not wearing any underwear during a police interview with a detective played by Michael Douglas. The storyline was nonsensical but people flocked to the movie to see Sharon Stone’s revealing pose.
Disclosure (1994) – $214 million
Based upon the Michael Crichton novel of the same name Disclosure had Michael Douglas hooking up with and competing against Demi Moore for control of a computer company.
The American President (1995) – $107 million
In The American President Michael Douglas plays a widowed President of the United States who becomes romantically involved with lobbyist Annette Bening.
The Game (1997) – $109 million
In The Game Michael Douglas and Sean Penn play rich brothers. Douglas is a rich investment banker with no personal life and Penn leads him through a wild game to show him there is more to life. This a sun, moon and stars aligned movie in which everything has to be perfect for the movie to work and of course in real life nothing is ever perfect.
A Perfect Murder (1998) – $128 million
In A Perfect Murder Michael Douglas plays a bad husband who tries to have his wife played by Gwyneth Paltrow killed so he can inherit her fortune but in the end Douglas ends up dead at the hands of Paltrow who commits a perfect murder.
Traffic (2000) – $208 million
In the critically acclaimed movie Traffic Michael Douglas plays a judge who is named the drug czar by the President of the United States but Douglas’ daughter is revealed to be a drug addict.
Don’t Say a Word (2001) – $100 million
In Don’t Say a Word Michael Douglas plays a psychologist who must get information out of a young mental patient to save his own kidnapped daughter. The movie is pretty forgettable except that Actress Brittany Murphy who died in 2009 from drug problems at the age of 32 played the young mental patient.
You, Me and Dupree (2006) – $130 million
You, Me and Dupree is a romantic comedy and Michael Douglas plays the father of the lead female character played by Kate Hudson and the boss of his son-in-law who he hates played by Matt Dillon. Owen Wilson plays Dupree the best man who cannot hold a job but is well liked by Michael Douglas.
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) – $102 million
In Ghosts of Girlfriends Past Michael Douglas plays a ghost in a movie based upon A Christmas Carol.
