Michigan’s current governor is Jennifer Granholm (D). She has served the last two terms as governor of Michigan; however, due to Michigan’s Constitution, she is not allowed to run for a third term. In addition, many people are unsatisfied with Granholm’s governorship due to economic downturn; therefore, this election is pivotal in Michigan.
Not only is it pivotal because a completely new politician is stepping into office, but also this election is pivotal based on the current economic crisis plaguing Michigan currently. Yes, the whole country is facing an economic downturn, but Michigan was hit harder and longer than most states. Michigan consistently has one of the highest unemployment numbers, and it seem as if jobs are fleeing Michigan. What happened to Detroit being the thriving Motor City? On top of unemployment numbers, Detroit’s government is rampant with corruption. What is even sadder is that the Detroit Public school system is even corrupted. Therefore, Michigan truly needs change as cliche as that sounds and with the right governor, we can see that change.
Representing the Republican party, Rick Snyder, also known as “one tough nerd,” is the candidate for governor. Rick Snyder is who I voted for during the primaries. He is a self-made, successful business man. In fact, he was the CEO of Gateway. He received three degrees by the age of 23 from the University of Michigan (Bachelors, Masters, and Juris Doctor). Pretty impressive. Therefore, I believe that he has financial knowledge and experience that other candidates lack. Based on the economic crisis of today, most politicians obviously do not have the right knowledge or skills about finances that truly qualifies them to lead our government. Most politicians received their education in the liberal arts and went to law school with no “real-world” experience but rather academic experience. Rick Snyder has “real-world” experience that quite frankly most politicians lack. I would rather trust a man who was able to make and manage a successful business than someone who is just a career politician. Rick Snyder claims that he loves Michigan, and instead of fleeing to other states as others have, he wants to stay through the thick and the thin in order to see Michigan thrive and prosper as it once had. His perseverance, experience, and success is what makes me and apparently many others have faith in Rick Snyder.
As it always is with politics, the questions politicians have to answer hardly ever have a right or wrong answer. However, because there is no other way around this problem, I put my faith and trust in Rick Snyder to lead my state to success.
