It’s time to make my 2010 NFL predictions and picks for the upcoming season. The preseason is underway and many teams have the potential to reach the Super Bowl this season. I have a strong feeling that only a handful of teams though will have the capability of actually winning the Super Bowl. Predictions and picks are very difficult in the NFL. Sometimes teams rise from the unexpected to lay claim on a division title. Will this year see an underdog dramatically reach the Super Bowl? Or will the powers that exist become consistent winners of division titles?
Let’s start with my predictions and picks for the 2010 NFC title. New Orleans is the defending champ and Super Bowl title holder. The Saints still have enough talent to make it back to the title game. The big question for NFC teams in the past is whether or not they can repeat. It hasn’t been an easy road for NFC teams trying to make back to back Super Bowls. In fact, Green Bay is the only team in the past 15 years to represent the NFC in back to back title games. The Packers won one and lost another in the 1997 and 1998 Super Bowl games against New England and Denver. Since then an NFC team has yet to make back to back Super Bowl title games. New Orleans certainly has the talent to get there but other NFC teams are inching closer. Could this be the year that Brett Favre leads the Vikings to the Super Bowl? Could Tony Romo and Dallas finally get over the hump? What about Aaron Rodgers and an up and coming Green Bay Packers team.
The NFC isn’t going to be easy to project. In fact, my 2010 NFL predictions and picks could come down to a coin toss. In the end, I have finally come up with an answer. The Dallas Cowboys defeat the Green Bay Packers in the NFC title game 24-17. Dallas has loaded up with talent and the defense could be defined as one of the best in the entire NFL if last year was any indication of what is to come. The Cowboys could upset the Saints and will most likely have the best record in the NFC. I feel as if Green Bay is going to be a huge threat with one of the most efficient quarterbacks in recent history in Rodgers. If Green Bay can play defense, look out for the Packers in 2010.
Why do I feel the Saints will not make it to the Super Bowl? Drew Brees had an incredible year and everything fell into place last season. I believe the Saints are still very good. I just also feel like the rest of the teams in the NFC are catching up quickly. The power balance has shifted with the NFC finally having an edge over the typically dominant AFC. Washington will be much better. Atlanta will be strong. Minnesota will always be a contender if Favre can stay healthy. The Giants, 49’ers, Cardinals and Bears will all be much better than in 2009. What does that signal for the NFC? It will be an absolute dog fight with relatively no breathers each week. The best overall record in the NFC could easily be 12-4 this season. Expect the NFC to be very competitive but I believe the Dallas Cowboys will finally emerge as NFC champs. Defense will be the biggest factor why Dallas finally regains its Super Bowl form.
My 2010 NFL predictions and picks continue with the AFC. The Indianapolis Colts are the immediate favorite. Until Peyton Manning retires, the Colts will always be a threat to contend. Peyton has a variety of weapons on offense. The big question for the Colts will be if the defense can hold opponents to less points than Peyton puts up each week. Who could challenge the Colts? Pittsburgh will be without Big Ben until almost the mid-point of the season. The Steelers could be nearly out of the playoff race before he even rejoins the team. New England will always be a threat with Tom Brady aboard. San Diego could be a bigger threat than many expect in the AFC. The Tennessee Titans finished last season with a flurry of wins. The Titans also sport Chris Johnson and perhaps the strongest running game in the entire NFL. Jeff Fisher typically knows how to make his teams play defense. If the ball control offense works to perfection, the Titans could be a factor. But who will make the AFC title game? My 2010 NFL predictions and picks have the Indianapolis Colts playing the Tennessee Titans in the AFC title game. I think the AFC is finally mediocre in terms of top notch teams who could go the distance.
Baltimore is a team that comes to mind in regards of potential to make noise. When it comes down to it, I still believe the Indianapolis Colts are a lock barring major injury. The Tennessee Titans will slip in as a wild card if Vince Young returns to his Superman Heisman-like status. The Titans could be a very diverse offensive team if Young continues to mature as a passer. Let’s just say that with anyone consistent at quarterback, Tennessee could be very scary for opponents in the red zone. Add to that fact that Vince Young has great legs and the Titans are potentially a great offensive team loaded with weapons. I still believe the Colts will once again head to the Super Bowl. The Colts beat the Titans 33-24 in the AFC title game.
According to my 2010 NFL predictions and picks, that would set up a 2010 Super Bowl match-up of Indianapolis vs. Dallas. The Cowboys will have the defensive factor and the Colts have a steady offense. Can you imagine the hype of the Cowboys defense against the Colts offense? It could quite well be the opposite that factors into this potential 2010 Super Bowl match-up. If Dallas can score more than 24 points, I look for the Cowboys to claim the 2010 Super Bowl title. My final prediction, Dallas wins the 2010 Super Bowl by a 27-21 final. Once again Peyton Manning and the Colts will have been denied only adding fuel to the fire of the ridiculous theory that Peyton Manning can’t win the big one. Peyton, by the way, has already won a Super Bowl. He will not be remembered as a Jim Kelly or Fran Tarkenton type. Although many NFL players would take one second of the careers either one of those greats enjoyed.
So who are my underdogs I can see perhaps upsetting these two teams on the way to the 2010 Super Bowl?
I think Green Bay and Baltimore are two teams loaded with talent that could somehow make it to the championship game. Aaron Rodgers is still maturing and he is one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the game. Joe Flacco has more targets to throw to and the Ravens are as solid on defense as you could get.
Any other underdogs with potential to reach the Super Bowl? Washington could be a threat with Donovan McNabb at quarterback. This team could take too long to gel but if that happens early look out for the Redskins.
San Diego has potential but the Chargers never seem to reach it. Could this be the year?
That’s it for my 2010 NFL predictions and picks. We’ll find out soon which teams are fast out of the gates.
