The NFL playoffs are inching closer and teams are trying to separate themselves from the pack. While a few teams have shown potential , many of them are suffering through a roller-coaster season. Take a look at our predictions for Week 9 of the 2010 NFL season to see how things will shape up.
Arizona Cardinals at Minnesota Vikings
The Cardinals lost a tough one to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but fans finally had a chance to see Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald reach the end zone for the first time in four games. The Vikings have continued their losing trends and are beginning to enter desperation mode with another injury to Brett Favre. The Cardinals should provide more of an offensive punch with quarterback Derek Anderson back in the lineup, but it will not be enough when they take on Adrian Peterson.
Prediction – Vikings 21 Cardinals 14
New York Jets at Detroit Lions
The Jets came out of their bye week sluggish on the offensive side and put up a big goose egg against a Packers’ team that was riddled with injuries. They are going to need quarterback Mark Sanchez to show up this week when they take on a Lions offense that is ranked in the top ten when it comes to scoring and passing. The Jets’ running game should find some holes against a Lions’ defense that has a hard time stopping the run and get the team back on the winning track.
Prediction – Jets 24 Lions 21
San Diego Chargers at Houston Texans
The Chargers earned a much needed win last week thanks to the performance of quarterback Phillips Rivers, who three for 305 yards with two scores. They will be traveling to Houston to take on a Texans team coming off a short work week after a disappointing loss to the Colts. If the Texans want to show the rest of the NFL that they are contenders, they will need to show they can stop the Chargers passing game which does not appear to lose a step no matter who is lined up at the receiver spot.
Prediction – Chargers 31 Texans 21
Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens
The Dolphins continue to come away with wins on the road after earning their fourth straight over the Bengals. They will be taking on a Ravens team fresh off a bye week and ready to jump back into the fray for the NFL playoff picture. Both defenses have shown they are capable of standing up and shutting down their opponents. The question is which one will break this week? The Dolphins have given up key big plays and this will be the turning point in this game as they earn their first road loss.
Prediction – Ravens 27 Dolphins 21
Chicago Bears at Buffalo Bills
The Bears needed some life brought back into their season after their bye week and the beaten down Buffalo Bills are the perfect opponent. The Bears will need to shore up their offensive line if they want to protect quarterback Jay Cutler from injury. The Bills showed some life on offense with running back Fred Jackson last week and will need to continue to ride the arm of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills will earn a hard fought home win over a stunned Bears team.
Prediction – Bills 17 Bears 13
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons
The Buccaneers continue to impress with their fifth win of the season and earned a share first place for the NFC South with their opponent this week, the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons boast a 3-0 record at home and will be relying upon their running game that averages 137.4 yards per game. The Buccaneers will counter with one of the worst run defenses in the NFL, allowing 149.4 yards per game. Despite their success on the road, look for the Buccaneers to earn a loss this weekend.
Prediction – Falcons 28 Buccaneers 14
New England Patriots at Cleveland Browns
The Patriots took over control of the AFC East with a win last week over the Vikings and will now travel to Cleveland to take on a rested Browns team. The Patriots boast a balanced offensive attack and have been averaging 29.3 points per game, tops in the NFL. They will be heading up against a Browns defense that is actually better than expected. The Browns will provide a fight for the Patriots during the first half but will eventually burn out by the end of the game.
Prediction – Patriots 31 Browns 17
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers
The Saints are going to be riding high after coming off an impressive win over the Steelers while the Panthers are still trying to find their groove this NFL season. The Saints offense looked balanced last week and show have their way with the Panthers this week. The one thing that can slow them down is if the Saints look past the Panthers and start to think how they are going to spend their bye week.
Prediction – Saints 21 Panthers 17
New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks
The Giants will be ready to come back off a bye week and take on a Seahawks team that was owned by the Raiders last week. The Seahawks will hopefully have found a way to shore up their defense that was susceptible to a lackluster Raiders’ passing game. The Giants are going to need to strike early and take the home crowd out of it if they want to be the first road team to win in Seattle this year.
Prediction – Giants 14 Seahawks 10
Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders
The middle of the NFL season is here and the Chiefs are still sitting at first place in the AFC West. They are fresh off an overtime win against the Bills and will be ready to take on their division opponent. The Raiders and Chiefs are both going to rely upon their running games to earn a win this week. The Raiders will need to find some stability with a run defense that has been giving up 127.4 yards per game. The Chiefs will continue to win roll this season with a high scoring game over the Raiders.
Prediction – Chiefs 31 Raiders 24
Indianapolis Colts at Philadelphia Eagles
The Colts find themselves in familiar territory, at the top of the AFC South after a win over the Texans while the quarterback controversy continues in Philadelphia. Quarterback Peyton Manning continues to show why he is one of the best in the history of the NFL and will be ready to put on a show against an Eagles defense that is middle of the road against the pass. NFL fans should expect some scoring from both squads in the city of Brotherly Love.
Prediction – Colts 31 Eagles 21
Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers
The Cowboys wide receivers looked like they mailed it in last week with the dropped passes that resulted in interceptions. On the flip side, the Packers looked impressive in their absolute dominance over the Jets during Week 8. The Packers are still hurting and will be going against a Cowboys team that is due for a win. The second shocker of the week will be the Cowboys coming to Cheese Country and knocking off an ailing Packers team.
Prediction – Cowboys 14 Packers 10
Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals
The Monday Night Showdown will feature two AFC North teams that will be ready to hit their opponents hard and throw the ball deep down the field. The Steelers looked mortal last week against the Saints and will need to find their offensive balance if they want to knock off the Bengals. Quarterback Carson Palmer and crew will have their hands full against the top defense in the NFL and will need to score quick and often if they want a win.
Prediction – Steelers 17 Bengals 14
