Now that the 2010 television seasons are well underway it’s time to predict which shows would make fantastic movies. We’ve already gone through 24, Lost, and other blockbusters but now is the time to see what other shows can take their moxie to the next level. Here are my favorite picks for current shows on television that would translate well to the big screen.
American Ferrera played the titular Betty for four successful seasons as Betty Suarez. Betty works in the world of fashion except she’s not as physically beautiful as her coworkers. The drama/comedy from ABC folded after four seasons when ratings dipped in 2009.
Not to be undone, RTT News reported in April that there may be a movie in the works for Ugly Betty. Ratings for the show went up in its final week, perhaps proving the pundits at ABC wrong for their cancellation. Ana Ortiz said there is a possibility of a movie because she said it’s something that America Ferrera would love to do.
A modern day Sherlock Holmes uses extreme deductive reasoning and knowledge of the human mind to solve the toughest cases. Simon Baker plays Patrick Jane, a private investigator who helps the California Bureau of Investigation solve its hardest cases in The Mentalist
His nemesis Red John is the one that got Jane started in crime fighting in the first place but now he continues to stalk the private eye again and again. A movie would be a perfect way to have a backstory for the nemeses or even wind up their story much like Holmes did with Professor Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls.
These are two shows that don’t get talked about enough even though they have sincerity and over the top characters. Surely many new shows for the fall will eventually be welcomed to the big screen. Until the new shows make their mark, my wife and I will wait eagerly for the Friends movie when Ross and Rachel finally get married.
