Here is the 2010 week 1 unbiased college football rankings which starts after the final 2009 rankings from ESPN. If you get the method, then you get the madness. This eliminates the biases by only using how things have played out on the field (that’s why they play the games, see Ole Miss, well, not in the rankings).
Tell me this, if Boise State can pick up 7 first place votes after beating VT, don’t you think Texas, Florda or even Ohio State, would have vaulted to #1 if they beat the same VT team? The answer is yes so, Broncos to #1. That was like a bowl game to start the season! Also, considering that the last two teams to beat Boise State and Alabama were TCU and Utah, respectively (both from the MWC) and Boise State just recently beat TCU, the Broncos get the nod again. Oh, and Alabama beat a FCS team so moving down a notch is not something to get too upset about (TCU gets the same senario in wk 2).
Is TCU better than Texas, that’s the new question being debated this week. Well, they both only had one loss last year to undefeated teams. You might say Texas is better because it played an extra game last year, but no, Louisiana-Monroe did not help their cause. All the fans that say, Rice is better than Oregon State, go ahead and put Texas ahead. TCU gets the nod. Wk 2, TCU will not get the nod.
Texas and Florida are both “rebuilding” with new quarterbacks. Texas does have a quarterback that played in the fake championship game but even unreal situations (ask Nebraska how real that time-out was in the Big 12 championship game) bring experience so Texas will stay ahead. The media wants Ohio State to get blown out in another championship game so they will jump ahead of those two teams at some point right?
Iowa had a great run last year, but lost to “THE” OSU so they might not be able to jump “THE” Buckeyes until they play each other. Good luck until then.
Penn State should still be in the top 10, I mean, they only lost to the Buckeyes and the Hawkeyes last year so that alone justifies their #9 ranking and they beat LSU in a bowl game. Well, all their ranking problems can be solved by beating Alabama in wk 2. Can you hear me Joe Pa–BEAT ALABAMA IN WEEK 2!!
Cincinnati is the biggest loser so far–lost their bowl game, lost their quarterback, lost their coach, lost their first game to unranked team. Out of gas. But, if Fresno State is ranked at the end of the year, that should make them feel better. Really, they lost the first game to a ranked team!
BYU beat Utah last year in overtime which is what Utah did to Pitt this year. Well, at least the Utes have the Cougs in Salt Lake City this time before they head out into the real world. They grow up so fast. Not sure either can get past TCU this year. Last year, TCU and BYU beat Oregon St but Oregon beat Utah. Oregon State has something in common with the last combined losses of Alabama and Boise St–two losses to MWC teams.
The Hurricanes just did beat Florida State last year, with the Seminoles clobbering BYU in the stadium Lavell built (while staying mostly uninspired for the rest of the year). So maybe the other Florida schools are going to make a run. Miami can solve this by beating “THE” OSU in wk 2.
Sorry, even USC can’t break into the UNBSD poll this year–although rooting for them to win can cause unintended BCS problems-you know, if the writers give the Trojans some kind of paper saying they won some championship with a trophy and all.
Georgia Tech is not getting much love from last year, even though they beat a preseason darling VT team in 2009 whereas Nebraska is getting a lot of love even though they lost to VT in 2009, and to Iowa St, ouch . . . and badly to Texas Tech. Besides, can Georgia Tech keep going until November without getting bored?
Kinda weird to see 0 win teams ranked in the top 25. Herbstreet/Musburger were saying Boise St had no chance at the title game with a loss to VT so the reverse should be applicable, however, the bias polls would allow a one loss Hokies to jump no loss Broncos. Well, maybe VT will win the rest of their games and play Boise St again.
Put whichever team you want in the last couple spots, it’s still early in the season. Everybody else, keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times–it’s going to get bumpy.
