An open letter to all elected officials and members of news media outlets:
The people have spoken, and they have spoken loudly. Recent polls indicate that 4 out of 5 Americans believe that fixing our economy is the number one priority for all elected officials going forward. This letter is my personal request to all elected officials to follow the hearts of the vast majority of the American people. My request is that you take a leadership role in creating and passing legislation that will support millions and millions of the unemployed. Focus on job creation initiatives and providing short term aid in the form of unemployment extensions and the creation of a Tier V for the 99ers. Action is required on your part to perform a much needed service to your constituents and for the nation as a whole.
Put political party rhetoric aside. It is critical that the Republicans, Democrats, and Independents come together in a bipartisan fashion in support of the national economy in general and the unemployed specifically. The long term unemployed need action now, not some long range plan for the future. People and their children are suffering greatly today! Action is needed to address these problems today! Follow the will of the people and develop and implement a strategy that will support the short term needs of millions of the long term unemployed, including the 99ers that have been abandoned. Try to remember that with 4 out of 5 people believing that economic recovery is our number one priority that this means Americans across party lines are in agreement. We expect our elected officials to work as a whole and not as separate entities on this critical issue.
The result of the midterm elections was not some resounding statement of a mandate for any particular political party, it was a mandate that the people want action taken to fix the economy, and they want it fixed now. Americans provide our elected officials with the very best resources that the world has to offer. We expect the full and committed use of these resources to be brought to bear for the good of the nation, not for the good of any political party. Failure to produce results for an economic recovery and for providing compassionate support to the unemployed will not play well for any elected official in the next election cycle. This is the only thing that was proved viewing the recent results of the midterm elections.
It is often said that if it was easy, anyone could do it. You were elected to handle the difficult, not the easy. By pulling together and working in a bipartisan fashion, you can send a wonderful message to the American people that will signal “we all need to work together.” This in turn will restore much needed consumer confidence in the markets that will help fuel the economic recovery. A nation divided against itself is not a nation. Only by taking a leadership position can you fulfill your mission and purpose. As we often expect others to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, we are asking you to do the same. Find the compromises that will engender the support of 4 out of 5 Americans. Gain our confidence. Win the hearts of a grateful nation. Be a leader, and let your leadership be construed as inclusive and not exclusive. We are counting on you to do what’s right. Will you to do the right thing? Reach across the aisle!
