With so many crime fighting cop shows on television today, “The Mentalist” takes a unique spin on solving crimes. Shenanigans and conning is one way to look at how Patrick Jane gets results while consulting with the CBI team he has been assigned to.
There have been only two other shows on television with a similar spin on solving crime. If you like “The Mentalist,” you may like reruns of “Monk” and watching past and present shows of “Lie to Me.”
“Monk” was the first of this type of show on television. “Monk” show ended in December 2009, but reruns can be seen online and on USA.
Even though Adrian Monk was on medical leave after the death of his wife and for his phobia fears, Monk to his unique skills in figuring out when the alibis and evidence didn’t match. He could catch the criminals with his unique approach with “This is really what happened” stories to solve the murders.
“Lie to Me”
“Lie to Me” is a little more in line with “The Mentalist,” but not completely. While Cal Lightman could tell when a person is lying by their facial expressions and body language, he has the same crazy sense about solving crime and getting people to admit to their lies like Patrick Jane does in “The Mentalist.”
In every show, you can count on Jane pulling some crazy stunt to get evidence and a confession from suspects. In the last episode, “The Mentalist – One Night Stand,” Patrick steals a toupee from the supposedly deceased man they were investigating the murder of. With this in mind, Lisbon, Jane, the CBI Team, and another suspect used this information to trick the wife and the “deceased” millionaire’s game plan out into the open.
Mind Tricks and Hypnotism
Patrick Jane also plays mind tricks and has been known to hypnotize people to get to the truth. He has on occasion put people under hypnotism without their knowledge to get them to say or do things they wouldn’t have said under normal interrogation.
During the last episode, Patrick was playing card games with Rigsby. Instead of telling him the card in the squad room, he waited until they were at the crime scene. He blurted out the card Rigsby drew. Rigsby blurts out some comment. Lisbon gets onto both of them for playing around in front of everyone.
Downside of “The Mentalist”
The only downside of “The Mentalist” is you can’t watch full episodes online. This can be a drawback for anyone wanting to catch up on episodes they haven’t seen.
