The numerous selections of wine in the mid-priced range can be a bit daunting in today’s modern wine world. Not that there isn’t any decent wine out there. No, no, no. It is because there is so much great wine in the market place today that it becomes hard just to make a decision! Here are a few white wines from the state of California that are very interesting and quite delicious.
Tangent Paragon Vineyard Riesling 2008
This winemakers focus here is on letting the fruit shine through from varietals that grow in cooler climate regions and they certainly hit the mark here. On the nose, this wine displays characteristic aromatics of melon and a bright freshness that jumps out of the glass at you. On the palate, the wine tastes of light melon and its strong backbone of acidity gives this wine a very vibrant taste. Great length in the wine continues to reveal the great fruit after you have enjoyed it. Pairs well with BBQ and spicy chicken or a crisp salad finished in a lighter dressing.
Kendall Jackson Vintner’s Summation Reserve 2008
Family owned and operated, it is always good to know that the producer of a wine is not just looking to make a profit, but is truly dedicated to ensuring a quality experience for the consumer. The aromatics of this wine display strong notes of melon and grapefruit. Flavors are reminiscent of a very smooth. buttery, creamy dessert. This is a very European type wine with variety of grapes including : Marsanne, Rousanne, Voignier, Semillion, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. A great wine to enjoy on a hot day that has a great level of complexity. Goes well with anything from a light creamy pasta to grilled chicken.
MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Gris 2008
Pinot Gris (or Pinot Grigio, they are synonymous) grows well in cooler climate areas and that is why the Sonoma Coast is a perfect place to grow this varietal. With the fog rolling into the area every day, the grapes are kept cool, while still getting the sunlight they need to grow. The Pinot Gris created by this winemaker is a very complex and intriguing wine that offers up a strong presence of peach, pear and citrus. Like most Pinot Grigio’s, this wine is fermented in stainless steel to allow the fruit to shine through and has a great crisp finish. Pairs well with grilled lighter fish or seafood mingled with a butter and herb sauce.
I hope that you enjoy these refreshing selections on a warm day by the pool.
