I have spent the last 16 days being thankful for many things – people and places – including many of my family members. Today, on this 17th day of thanksgiving I wish to give thanks for all those family members I may not have mentioned previously. Forgive me for throwing you all into one big pile but please know that I am so very thankful for all of you, just the same.
I actually have 3 types of family. I have the family that I was raised with. I have the family I discovered by locating my birth parents. And I have friends that I consider family. Now that is one big family – for sure.
Before I found my birth family I was never stuck on the fact that family had to be blood-related. I grew up with some pretty amazing people (my family) and none of them have my blood, nor do I have theirs. And for most of my life this really didn’t matter – it still doesn’t, actually.
I also have a small group of friends that I consider a part of my family. You know, those friends who are in your life, their love is unconditional, they make you crazy, they make you laugh, they make you cry – you know…family.
And I am also fortunate to have my birth family. I was adopted when I was six weeks old. For 37 years I had no idea who, what, or where my blood relations were. As it turns out, I found them right when I was supposed to; for this I am thankful!
My family has made me who I am today:
I am a daughter
I am a mother
I am a girlfriend
I am a niece
I am a sister (a big sister and a little one too)
I am an aunt
I am a cousin
I am a sister-in-law
I am a daughter-in-law
I am blessed.
All these folks that I call family did all that stuff above – for me. How darn lucky am I?
Today I wish to honor all those who are my family. Each of you has had a hand in who I’ve become – no matter how long we’ve been “related”. I love you and I thank you for being the best family a girl could have.
ALL my family – I am truly blessed for each and every one!
Please Note: I do believe that family is what you make of it. Your family may consist of many folks; blood-born or not. Take a moment to be thankful for your family. There are no other people on this earth who are going to love you like your family does – good, bad, or indifferent!
And what is all this thanking going on this month? Well if you didn’t know, its November; perhaps the most thanking-est* month of the year. Please read 30 Days of Thanksgiving-One Day at a Time to discover just who inspired my thanksgiving month of November. And remember, giving thanks for your many blessings does not have to be just a November thing. Enjoy!
*Thanking-est: the most thankful (e.g., …thanking-est month of the year). Yes, I made it up; but I like it!!
