When you get a new computer without all your programs and files installed it’s almost like a new house just waiting to be decorated. What are the first things that need to be installed on the computer? The list below is four programs that are absolutely essential for a new computer today in my opinion and should be the first programs installed.
Spybot Search and Destroy
Spybot is not only one of the best anti spyware tools available it also has more powerful features when switched to the advanced mode. You can have it immunize your browser against known vulnerabilities. It can rewrite your Hosts file and allow you to remove unwanted programs in the startup and browser addons.
Firefox is a great browser and has been a standards compliant browser since its inception. It has great popup blocking ability and other built in security features. Google Chrome is another good browser much like Firefox. However I decided to list Firefox as it is a personal favorite of mine and I really like the user interface more than Chrome or Internet Explorer.
Running a computer today without some sort of antivirus software is … well … crazy! With all the threats that are out you need a good updated antivirus to protect you. Having your new computer go down to a virus in just a short while can be devastating. Protecting yourself from these viruses is a must, because odds are you will be attacked if your computer is online. If you purchase your computer with all the software already installed then you’ll likely have an antivirus like McAfee or Norton installed. While both are good, they will eventually time out and you’ll need to buy a subscription to continue being covered. Avira is free for personal use.
Most new computers come with Adobe Reader installed so you may not need this if you purchased the pc from a large retailer that has all the software installed for you. However it may need updating and if you installed the operating system yourself then you’ll need to install Adobe Reader too. You won’t be able to read PDF documents until you do unless you find an alternative reader.
All the programs listed in this article are free and available on the internet. Be sure to install all the updates to your operating system as soon as you get the computer and get it online. Once you’ve got the operating system updated and all the programs installed it’s a good idea to check to see if there are any updates available for the programs you’ve got installed. Keeping your computer up to date can help it run faster.
