There are so many things to do in Dubuque , Iowa, that it is hard to highlight just five fun things, but here are some interesting activities to check out.
Art on the River
What is free, accessible, and can be seen during daylight hours all year long? It’s the Art on the River exhibit. This outdoor sculpture exhibit showcases ten works of art that can be viewed as you walk near the Mississippi River on the RiverWalk in the Port of Dubuque. This year’s exhibit runs through June 2011.
National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium
Also located in the Port of Dubuque is the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium. This is a great place to take the family to see fish, river exhibits and enjoy hands-on activities. There are so many things to do here that you may want to spend more then one day exploring everything. Hours of operation vary during the year, but range from 9:00 or 10:00 am to 5:00 or 6:00 pm. Admission prices are adults $15.00, seniors 65 and over $13.00, and children 3-17 $10.00.
Fenelon Place Elevator
The Fenelon Place Elevator is a railway that carries people up the hill from Fourth Street to Fenelon Place , a vertical lift of 189 feet. Once at the top, you can see three states ( Iowa , Illinois , and Wisconsin ), the Mississippi River and downtown Dubuque . It operates April 1- November 30. Children under five are free, adults $1-2.00 and children 5-12 .50-$1.00. Fees vary depending on whether the ride is one way or round trip.
The Spirit of Dubuque
The Spirit of Dubuque is a paddlewheel riverboat that offers sightseeing, lunch, dinner and special theme cruises. This is a great way to view the Mississippi River , scenic river banks, bluffs, nearby sights, and have some good food. Rates and cruise schedule vary.
The Mines of Spain
Located south of Dubuque , Iowa , is the Mines of Spain Recreation Area and E.B. Lyons Interpretive and Nature Center . Things to see and do include nature walks, hiking trails, picnic areas, various wildlife habitats, the Betty Hauptli Bird and Butterfly Garden, scenic overlooks, Horseshoe Bluff, nature programs, prairies, wetlands, the Julien Dubuque Monument and many more. The whole area is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. I love watching the Mississippi River from the various overlooks. Park hours are from 4 am to 10:30 pm year round.
