A Promise from God: Seek and You Will Find
Jeremiah 29:13: “.You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
When I was a child I had a little ditty I’d say to accentuate my commitment to a promise or to confirm that I was speaking the truth. “Cross my heart and hope to die. Stick a needle in my eye.” I’d be lying if I said I’d kept every promise I’ve made. Sometimes I changed my mind, or I forgot, or circumstances made the promise unimportant.
The validity of a promise is measured by the ability of the promise maker to keep it. We can trust the promise God makes in Jeremiah 10:13. When we seek God, we will find him. God will listen to us when we call His name and pray to Him.
So, go ahead. Take a step of faith and start depending on God-the Promise Keeper.
A Promise from Jesus: Don’t Be Afraid
Matthew 17:7: Jesus came and touched the disciples. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.”
Fear, I have felt its paralyzing touch. Especially as our neighbor and his friend drove us to the Beirut airport during the middle of Lebanon’s civil war. “We’ll avoid the dangers of the airport road by driving through the Palestinian refugee camp,” the driver announced.
Suddenly Lebanese soldiers blocked our route. “Turn back!” they shouted. “Armed men are standing around the corner.”
Instead our driver made a quick right turn. There they stood. Armed men. Not in uniform, either. Our friend pulled up to them and called out, “Hi friends. Is this a safe road to the airport?”
“Yes,” they responded. “Keep going!”
Three blockades later we arrived at the airport in time to catch our flight. At each stop I heard the calm voice of Jesus saying “Don’t be afraid.”
Jesus is always ready to calm your fears. Only ask.
A Promise from Jesus: Free Water. Free Peace
Revelation 21:6: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.
Our neighbor overseas wasn’t raised as a Christian. His religion demanded frequent prayers and ritualized worship. “But I couldn’t find the peace I was looking for,” he shared. “I heard about the peace that Jesus gives on a radio program. I called the phone number announced at the end of the program and made a date with the radio speaker.
That speaker taught me about the water of life Jesus offers to those who seek him. I made a huge step of faith and decided to follow Jesus. Now I am truly a man of peace.”
A Promise from God: Blessings for Our Children and Grandchildren
Isaiah 44:3: “I will pour my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
Our daughter called us in Papua New Guinea with bad news. Our six-week old grandson was seriously ill and in the hospital. The next day came the diagnosis: Hydrocephalus (water on the brain). The doctors recommended a shunt.
The surgery was a success. However, we still held our breath as we watched him grow. Would there be negative affects from this condition? Today our grandson is a senior in high school, He is physically strong, mentally capable, and delightful to be with.
God does care about our children and our grandchildren-our future generations. His promise of blessing is true.
A Promise about God: God Is Waiting to Meet Our Needs
Philippians 4:19: “My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”
It wasn’t easy to send our daughter Beverly 10,000 miles from our home in Papua New Guinea to start college. After she left, I decided to pray a prayer of imagination specifically for her financial needs. I imagined her walking into the drugstore close to the school, pushing the cart down the aisle, and placing needed articles in the basket.
I imagined her walking up to the register and placing all her items on the counter. I see her reaching for her wallet after the total amount due is posted. She’s pull out more than enough cash to pay for her supplies. Shortly afterwards Beverly phoned us. “I’m doing fine. I have an on-campus job, and I’m making enough to even go out for pizza.”
We can bring our needs to God in prayer.
