Love it or hate it, daily exercise is something that should be a part of every person’s routine. Whether it’s outdoor activities like jogging or swimming or indoor exercise with fitness equipment and DVDs, exercise is an important part of overall health. Before you start thinking of excuses as to why you can’t fit exercise into your schedule, consider the benefits of participating in a consistent workout.
Exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise, has a positive effect on bone health. When you put light stress on your bones, the skeletal system responds by restructuring the bones to support the extra weight. This in turn leads to greater bone strength and can help prevent osteoporosis and fractures associated with brittle bones.
Participating in aerobic exercise such as running, cardio DVD workouts, or riding a stationary bicycle challenges both heart and lungs to work harder for an extended period of time. This strengthens the heart muscles and can help improve circulation. Aerobic endurance exercises also help the heart to be more efficient when you’re not exercising, which can mean a lower resting pulse and less strain on your cardiovascular system.
Stretching is an integral part of daily exercise. Warming up and cooling down often involve a variety of stretches to aid in easing the muscles in and out of activity. Some workouts such as yoga incorporate stretching as part of the exercise routine. Whatever method you choose, having a good stretch when you work out will increase your overall flexibility and make you less prone to injury both during exercise and in everyday life.

Do you ever find yourself wishing that you could reach a little farther, bend a little lower, or lift something a little heavier as you go about daily tasks? By conditioning your body through exercise, you’ll make it easier to accomplish even the simplest chores. Increased strength and flexibility aid in completing tasks, while greater endurance means you won’t tire out as quickly and may be able to get more done in less time.
Consistent exercise helps to keep your entire body healthy. This can be especially helpful as you age and begin to face common illnesses. A healthy body does a better job of fighting off infection, and having strong body systems can help reduce your risk of more serious diseases and conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, and some types of cancer. Also, you’ll just plain feel better!
So the next time you find yourself putting off your workout, keep in mind what regular exercise can do for your body. Regular workouts will improve both how you look on the outside and how you feel on the inside. The recommended amount of exercise is an average of thirty minutes on most days of the week, which isn’t hard to fit into your daily routine.
