The Uberman Sleep Schedule isn’t for everyone, but for those brave enough to try it, finding time for numerous activities will not be a problem. In fact, you may have more time than you know what to do with, particularly during the first few days. However, given that you’ll be sleep deprived and your eyes heavy lided, you may want to avoid certain activities while on the Uberman Sleep Schedule.
Uberman Sleep Activities to Avoid
1. Driving: You know you’re going to have to drive, but it’s probably not the best idea to jump into it right away. Driving while going without sleep can make you highly dangerous to others, both cars and pedestrians, and to yourself. So, it may be a good time to take up walking, public transportation, or phone a friend.
2. Paperwork: Usually, paperwork is a slow process that you might try to avoid. It will be no different when you’re on the Uberman Sleep Schedule, but with one added bonus: you’re ability to concentrate for the first week or two will be highly impaired. Do what you must, but it might be time to let the bank balance the check book for a couple of weeks.
3. Exercise: You’re going to be tired on your push to become an Uberman sleeper, and exercise may seem like a great idea to keep you awake, but your coordination will be shot, and your ability to pay attention to your surroundings may not be much better, so steer clear of the gym or high impact exercise. Your body doesn’t have the time to recover, and you’re much more likely to injure yourself with weights or other machines at this time.
4. Writing: Similar to paperwork, your ability to write may be impaired. Remember those days in college when you pulled an all nighter only to realize that your great paper was full of grammatical and spelling mistakes? Well, welcome to the world of polyphasic sleep. You may eventually pull of the transition, but until your body learns to front load REM sleep, steer clear of this task.
5. Heavy Machinery: Although you may think that a riding lawnmower constitutes a small engine, when you’re hanging on with nothing more than a few hours of sleep, it could be the death of you. Try to keep chores of work requiring attention to detail at a minimum.
Some swear by the Uberman Sleep Schedule, others have blogged numerous times about their failed attempts. It’s up to you and your biology as to whether or not you can pull off the nap time schedule, but until that time, and during your Uberman attempt, take care and pay attention.
