One of the open secrets about college is it’s really what you make of it. Without your parents watching over your shoulder, without teachers checking up on you every step of the way, what you get out of your college experience really depends on what you, yourself, do.
This is good news, because it means you are very much in control of your college experience. You get to decide whether it’s a good or bad one.
It really just depends on how open you are to the experience, and how active you are in achieving what you want to get out of your college experience.
Here are 5 tips to make it a good experience.
Get involved. A college campus can be a lonely place if you aren’t involved in clubs and activities. But it can be an amazing place if you are active. The more involved you are, the better your college experience is going to be. So, join clubs that you’re interested in and don’t be afraid to try something new.
Improve your time management. In a place like college, there’s so much to do that it can be very easy to forget until the last minute that you have that big, 20-page paper due…oops. Don’t let that happen to you. Become better at managing your time by getting a calendar and using it regularly to record all the things you have to get done.
Reach out for help. Unlike high school, teachers aren’t necessarily going to offer their help if you don’t ask for it. But they are more than willing to help you out with homework or things you’re confused with if you take the time to ask. If you don’t understand something, make sure to ask. Remember, it’s very likely that if you have the question, other people in your class have the same question, too.
Go to professors’ office hours. It’s hard to get to know a professor during a giant lecture, so take advantage of office hours to get to know your professors better and to let them get to know you. If you’re someone your professor knows, they’re more likely to give you the benefit of the doubt if you need it down the road. Plus, you never know when you’re going to need a reference.
Try new things. One of the great things about college is you don’t have to have made up your mind on what you want to do in life or what your career is going to be. College is the perfect time to try out new interests or hobbies that you never had time or the opportunity to try out before.
