If your winter wardrobe is looking as dull and ‘blah’ as the weather lately, it’s time to give the closet a mini makeover! Frigid temperatures and shorter days may have you stuck indoors on weekends or spending long days at the office. This doesn’t mean you need to settle for a daily uniform of chunky sweaters, wool pants and corduroys all season. The darker hues of winter can be enhanced and with just the right accessories, and complemented with scarves and belts that add a splash of color. I use some of these strategies to keep my winter wardrobe looking fresh and in line with the season’s hottest trends:
#1: Bring Purple Into the Mix
Purple continues to reign as the ‘it’ color of the season each winter, so don’t be afraid to invest in the perfect purple dress, satin blouse, knit cardigans and accessories. From plum purple to violet, you have a wealth of options to add this regal color to your wardrobe. Purple is also very versatile because it pairs well with all shades of grey and any black skirts, dresses, tops and suits you’re sporting this season. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing purple clothing, freshen up your look with a purple scarf, tights, a thick purple belt or carry a stylish tote or handbag in your favorite shade of purple this season.
#2: Add Some Fur Appeal
Fur continues to be a hot trend for winter season. Whether you choose real fur accents or artificial fur accessories, there are plenty of ways to incorporate this trend into your winter wardrobe. Wear a fur shrug with your favorite dress or accessorize with a fur-trimmed wrap or shawl. Fur scarves can liven up any simple sweater or full-sleeve shirt for the season!
#3: Heat Things Up with a Touch of Red
All hues of red will make a bold fashion statement for winter and can brighten up your wardrobe in a flash. Complete a black or grey ensemble with a red sweater, coat, belt or even a pair of red boots! Red hats and gloves can add a stylish touch to an otherwise drab ensemble. If you don’t like bright red, try burgundy or a deep and dark red instead.
#4: Go for Texture
Textured tights, ribbed stockings, feather accents on a hat and crushed velvet scarves are always in style over the winter season. When you don’t have the funds to buy a whole new winter wardrobe, focus on the details instead. Multicolored or patterned tights can freshen up a simple black shift dress or other plain dress this winter. A brightly-colored crushed velvet scarf will add a glamorous touch to a plain sweater or v-neck shirt. Feather accents on bags, hats and other accessories will add some ‘wow’ factor to your look without overdoing it. Be creative and seek out some fun, playful and unique accessories to complement otherwise simple clothing.
#5: Master the Masculine/Feminine Balance
Grey, black and white suiting pieces are a great way to add a masculine touch to your otherwise very-feminine wardrobe. Play with military-style jackets, leather coats and boots, puffer-style biker jackets, tuxedo-style vests and blazers to freshen up your winter wardrobe. Layering these pieces with a simple black or grey tunic dress or shift dress can create a whole new look that’s perfect for a day of shopping with friends or social events.
From fur-trimmed wraps to purple accessories, there are several easy – and affordable – ways to freshen up your winter wardrobe! Use these tips and ideas to brighten up neutral shades for your office or casual wardrobe this season and play with some fresh new styles and trends to find your perfect look!
