With the holidays rapidly approaching, it’s time to start thinking about ideas for that annual family portrait. What better time to take a portrait then the fall, when you can take advantage of the cool weather and beautiful scenery. Here are some creative ideas so your family photo will stand out from all the rest.
For a portrait that pops, bring the family out in the yard or anywhere where you can have the fall scenery as your background. You’re going to need an assistant to help you out with this photo. When you’re ready to take the picture have your assistant throw a few leaves up into the photo. When your editing it, make the whole photo black and white, but, and you’re going to need a good photo editing program to do this, keep the few leaves that landed in the portrait in color. Then you will have an original photo that is sure to wow everybody.
For a cute photo of your kids, have them go out in the yard and collect a certain color of leaves. Assign each child a different color, such as red, orange, or yellow. This may take a few days, but after you have enough for a medium size pile, dress your kids in a shirt that coordinates with their color leaf. Organize each pile of leaves next to each other and have each child play in their color pile. This will make for a fun portrait for both you and the kids.
If you have a newborn, this is a good idea for their first fall photo. Take a pumpkin that is somewhat bigger than your newborn and lay them across it while their sleeping. Dress them in a little orange colored hat to match. When you look back at this photo, you’ll not only be able to see how big your little one was then, but it will be a cherished photo that will grace the walls of your house for years to come.
The final idea that I have for a fall portrait is one that the whole family can have fun taking. Go to an apple orchard and dress your family all in jeans and a flannel shirt. Pose each member of the family in a position that’s akin to their personality. Have the adventurous one of the family on the ladder picking apples. Dad and Mom could be holding the bushels of apples that you’ve already picked. The other kids could be hugging the apple tree. This family portrait idea is a way for everyone to show off their special personality while getting in a day of quality family time and a good portrait at the same time.
So whatever portrait idea you decide on, you will not only have a family photo that you can treasure forever, but great memories as well.
