Go eat at the ‘Cottage Grill’ 8573 S US Highway #1 Port St. Lucie, Florida, tel # (772) 323-0236
DO IT NOW! This location has been home to more than one restaurant since this writer/diner has lived in Port Saint Lucie over the past 15 years-Up until 1999,it was the site of the excellent Mexican restaurant, Zapata’s ,really this was the last time an eatery at this location seemed truly successful. I have tried the other incarnations Italian and New England fare.
Now the site is back in the hands of the original Zapata’s restaurateurs. NO it is not back as a Mexican restaurant. The Cottage Grill features a blending of cuisines, with an emphasis on Contemporary American.
I started with the Split Pea and ham soup ,very chunky, rustic one might say, perfectly seasoned. Next came the seafood crepes-filled with bay scallops, shrimp ,and mushrooms in a delicate sauce.-being a guy, I hadn’t eaten a crepe in 33 years ,but these were fantastic- Finished the meal off with Mango Pie -made with a custardy Mango puree redolent of Key Lime Pie–that is the consistency. My companions had a grilled cheese-with ham and tomato–the other a fresh garden salad and chicken fingers –all were fresh and very reasonably priced.
Other selections on the menu range from burgers to fish and chips-including one surprise “duck wings” –These I did not try, but as a fan of the chicken variety, I will keep them in mind–On a second visit to the Cottage Grill, I tried the Fish and Chips, reasonably priced –only one piece of fish however—but for a lunch it was sufficient. Very mild, but not bland. My wife tried the fish cakes –combination of salmon and cod. Other friends swear by the cheeseburgers that they say are the best, as is the chicken Caesar salad. Basically everything is very reasonable priced -served in a clean very tastefully decorated setting –Large original contemporary art pieces. Would remind me of a Miami Bistro although I have never eaten in Miami, and probably have never been in a bistro either.
Overall the staff is friendly ,experienced ,competent –although we went for lunch both days –late 2:30-and 3:00 pm respectfully there was a nice little crowd.
