I often have family from out of town come to visit at least once a year. A good present to thank them for coming out is pictures of our kids that they came to visit. I used to just send a thank you card with pictures in it or on it. But this year I am doing something different. I am sending them pictures in a CD case, and I’ll tell you how.
To start off with, you are going to need an empty CD case. It can be an old used one or a new one you bought. Which ever you choose you just need to make sure it is clear so you can see through it, and that it doesn’t have any cracks.
Next you will need clear glue, or glue that dries clear. You could even use glue dots if you are a scrapbooker and have those.
Then you are going to need something for the background. For this I go to the scrapbook section of my local store, hobby store, craft store, or scrapbook store, and find a scrapbook piece of paper that reflects the time that my visitors came. Whether it’s summer time, fall time, winter, or whether we went camping, to the beach, or the pumpkin patch. Or, if you prefer, you can get a paper that coordinates with the pictures or the person’s décor at their house, or just a generic neutral background. It is up to you, and trust me, you’ll have lots to choose from and make a decision with, especially if you go to a scrapbooking store.
Finally you will need a picture. I like to have one or two wallet sized pictures. However if you have mini pictures or locket sized pictures you could do up to five. And, if you want to finish the picture off a little more, while you’re in the scrapbook section looking for a background paper, pick up a paper frame for your pictures or corner pieces.
Now for the assembly of your gift.
Cut the scrapbook background paper to fit in the CD case and fill the entire back side of the case. Using clear glue, or glue dots, put a dab of glue on the inside of each of the four corners of the back side of the case. Then, gently place your paper in on top of the glue. Allow the glue to dry.
Once the glue has dried you will need to decide how you’re going to arrange your photos in the CD case. If you have one picture, are you going to place it in the center? Or perhaps, you will place it off to the side or in one of the corners and put a nice poem or letter in the CD case with it?
If you have two pictures the nicest ways to display them is to put them in opposite corners of the case, one in one of the top corners and the other in the opposite bottom corner. Or you can place them in a row down the center or on one of the sides and add a nice letter or drawing from your kids on the other side.
If you have three pictures, I think the best way to display them in the case is to put them in a diagonal line from the right or left corner on the top to the opposite corner on the bottom. So you will have one picture in a top corner, one in the center of the case, and the last one in the opposite corner on the bottom. However, if you need room to add a drawing, poem or letter, you could put them all together along the top or bottom of the CD case, or put one in the center of the case and put the other two in both the corners on the bottom or top of the case.
For four pictures, the nicest way to display them would be one in each corner, or clustered all together in the center of the CD case.
For five pictures, put one in each corner and one in the center.
Once you have the pictures in an arrangement that you like glue them to the background paper.
Now you can add a frame around the pictures or corner pieces if you picked those up at the scrapbook store.
Close the CD case, place it in a small box (not an envelope of any kind because it may break during shipping) and mail it off to your friend or relative.
These also make a nice Christmas, birthday, mother’s day, father’s day, or grandparent’s day gifts. Or a nice way to send the grandparent’s the kids’ school pictures, or display their school pictures in your home.
You can add a magnet to the back side of the CD case so you can place it on the fridge for everyone to see, or glue a ribbon to the back and hang it on a wall.
