Bristol Palin made it to the finals of the hit TV series “Dancing with the Stars,” while actress and R&B singing sensation Brandy was sent home. The reality show viewers spoke their minds through the show’s customary call-in voting system. Despite receiving repeatedly low scores from judges after each and every performance, former Alaskan governor Sarah Palin’s eldest daughter continues to sashay forward.
However, many of the popular show’s viewers complained on NJ.com’s website about Bristol being given the green light to continue to offer her performances through the finals. One user summed up the overall sentiment by stating that people should be voting on Bristol’s dancing ability and not on her mother’s politics.
Why Bristol Palin is Still Dancing
The truth of the matter is Bristol Palin likely remains on “Dancing with the Stars” because she gets ratings. When all of the votes are finally counted by ABC, there are a select few executives who really know how many votes were tallied for each dancing couple. If focus groups like Bristol on the show and she yields more ratings than another, ABC will logically do everything in its power to keep her dancing each week.
Or, quite possibly, despite scoring poorly with the judges, Bristol maintains a position on the show because viewers voted her there. It may have nothing to do with her mother’s politics; it may have everything to do with Bristol’s ever-growing popularity in the public eye.
Sarah Palin is logically trying to remain relevant in the national spotlight. It’s clear this is her agenda, as she quit the governorship of Alaska to go on book tour, and it’s why she cleverly endorsed Tea Party candidates in the midterm elections.
Sarah earns a hefty sum for speaking engagements–upwards of $75,000 per gig, according to Business Insider. She also sits in the audience cheering on her eldest daughter every week on “Dancing with the Stars.” It’s not difficult to do the ratings math.
It’s not difficult to see what all the fuss is about regarding Bristol’s performance on “Dancing with the Stars” over the past few weeks.
The judges are right. Bristol doesn’t have the passion and raw emotion, either in her face or in her body, to be a superior dancer. She appears stoic, nervous and out-of-place and -sync with her dancing partner.
To be fair, all the other contestants on “Dancing with the Stars” are accustomed to being in the spotlight and have undoubtedly grown used to having lots of people watch them.
Kurt Warner, Brandy and even Florence Henderson are all seasoned performers who probably don’t suffer from stage fright. Bristol looks more like a deer caught in headlights every time she steps on stage, rather than a consummate performer.
The truth is no matter how hard her professional partner trains her to do the steps, if her heart isn’t in it, it’s evident in her performance. More than likely, Bristol made it to finals week on “Dancing with the Stars” as a testament to her family’s continued relevancy in the public eye and little else.
