World renown visual and tattoo artist Paul Booth has created a womb to shelter himself, his visions, and the art-thirsty beings of New York City, right in the belly of the world. Just a few blocks away from Penn Station, on 10th ave and 33rd st, you’ll find a secret haven for all that is Dark art. But I mean, quality, good, delicious, exhilerating, nerve-wrecking dark art. The kind that either gives you the shivers, makes you smile with a devilish grin, or simply, walk away quickly, after finding inner fears reflected on the canvas.
Each wall, each corner, each sound and emotion happening at Last Rites Gallery, has been carefully constructed by the mischievous brains of Paul Booth and his team. Signed and numbered print editions by artists of high caliber, such as H.R. Giger, Paul Booth himself, Fred Harper and Genevive Zacconi are available to those whose art collection is once again in dire need of a proper boost, or to those right on time to start collecting.
Adjacent, Last Rites Tattoo Theater and Art Fusion bring that drop of exotic darkness fit for the city of sin and sleepless wonders. Resident Artists, Toxic, Little Dragon, Stefano Alcantara and Timothy Boor together with guest artists from all over the world, join their skills during the opening celebrations of each exhibit as part of The Art Fusion Experiment, delivering a combination of colors and imaginary insects and beautiful monsters that leave many with their jaws dropped.
I have chosen Last Rites Gallery the featured gallery for this post, because of the quality of the art they represent, the skillful presentation of each of their shows, the originality and magnificence of their concept, and over all, for creating an open space for New York City artists to interact, while surrounded by the desguise of great ink, and even greater art.
Statement by Last Rites Gallery:
Last Rites Gallery was created to offer a new home for artists that prefer to explore the darker side of their imagination. Our intent is to bring a greater appreciation to this often overlooked genre.
We feel that the most powerful art is that which touches the viewer emotionally. By hitting a nerve, this work will often cause one to look inward and explore their own feelings and intense thoughts. Facing one’s fears, negating puritanical taboos, and tapping into often repressed emotions is truly empowering and this is where dark art finds its strength. Last Rites Gallery offers a place to recognise this work as it relates to the individual.
We utilize the global reputation of artist and gallery owner Paul Booth, built over that last 20 years to bring a broader scope of art patrons, as well as interest and understanding in the phenomenon of dark art.
The uniqueness of the gallery, aside from its focus on such work, is the collaborative effort between founding director, Genevive Zacconi and Paul Booth. The fact that they are accomplished artists as well, allows for a stronger relationship with the artists we show, and a more understanding and creative approach to the overall presentation of their work. This enhances the experience for everyone visiting Last Rites Gallery.
