Because of what could be toxic smoke coming from the Equipment Assets, Inc company at 1200 Knowles in Royal Oak, Michigan the residents don’t feel comfortable in their own yard and now avoid going outside.
According to a Google search, Equipment Assets, Inc. is categorized as metal-working machinery and even though they don’t employ a lot of people the company does rake in 2.5 to 5 million dollars annually.
Some residents believe that the company, which started out reconditioning Hi-Los, has started scraping metal because of the jump in metal prices and could now be considered a salvage yard which would be a violation of city and state laws which was reported by the Daily Tribune.
The city of Royal Oak does have regulations against smoke emissions and if Equipment Assets, Inc really is burning salvaged material continuously then they are in violation of a code which states that if the smoke emissions density is of No. 3 or greater according to the Ringelman Smoke Chart then smoke emissions cannot exceed more than 6 minutes in any one hour. It seems like a little strategic planning and a well placed video camera could prove that this company is in violations of this code. Of course someone has to prove that the smoke emission is at least a No. 3 or greater according to the chart.
The Royal Oak fire department has been called many times to investigate Equipment Assets, Inc. but they say that the company is not violating any codes. The Mayor of Royal Oak, Jim Ellison, is still watching them closely and the residents are anxiously waiting for the report from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources & Environment. They intend to keep complaining until something is done about this stinky situation.
