“I wish he was dead” Gretchen said to her friend on the phone. She was talking about her ex-husband Tyler. Tyler kept finding any excuse to take her back to court.
Suddenly a woman appeared behind Gretchen while she was getting into her car at Shopko. Gretchen got off the phone.
“Do you really want your ex-husband dead?” the woman asked.
“Who are you? How did you get here? I didn’t even see you come up behind me!” Gretchen said.
“I wanted to meet you. I can help you with your ex-husband. My name is Vanessa and I am a witch in the Northwoods coven.” she explained.
“I don’t really want him dead. How could you help me with him?” Gretchen asked.
“I can work some magic in my coven. What do you have in mind?” said the witch.
“Can you have his ex-girlfriends come back to haunt him? That would be funny!” Gretchen said jokingly.
“It can be arranged.” the witch said and turned on her heels and left.
A few days later, Gretchen was coming home and parked her car. As she got to her front door she heard a laugh she recognized. Her old boyfriend from middle school appeared. He had a goofy cheese head hat on his head. His name was Willy and he was laughing hysterically while he talked on the phone.
“What are you doing here?” Gretchen asked.
“Hang on” Willy said and pointed his finger to wave her away while he continued to talk.
Gretchen repeated herself. “What are you doing here?”
“Long story short – weird woman, says she’s a witch, told me where you lived. I am here to repossess your car.” Willy said.
“Willy how can you take my car? Don’t you remember me from junior high?” Gretchen asked.
“Yes, but I still need the keys to your car or I will tow it. Sorry but its my job.” Willy said. Gretchen gave him the keys to her car. Willy backed the tow truck up and the car was gone.
Gretchen had been making the car payments to her ex-husband’s mother since the car was still in her name. They had never bothered to transfer it to Gretchen’s name. Gretchen called her ex-mother-in-law to ask why she hadn’t made the car payments.
“Tyler and his girlfriend came by and said they needed money. I thought I could still make the payments by the due date but I didn’t. Sorry” she said.
Gretchen hung up the phone. Her kids came running up to her.
“There is a man outside” her son Bobby said. “He has a clipboard and says he is with the HOA. He wants to talk to you.”
Gretchen looked out her window. It was Steve, the boyfriend she dated in high school.
“What are you doing here?” Gretchen said.
“I am Steve with the Home Owner’s Association. We had a meeting and noticed you have some brown patches on your grass and some dandelions. That is against the HOA code” Steve said. He didn’t seem to recognize her.
“Steve, Don’t you remember me?” she said.
“Yes. I do. It is real nice seeing you again. What have you been doing?” Steve said.
“Well, I have two kids now and a dog now” Gretchen said.
“I live in the neighborhood and the HOA voted that I should talk to you about your lawn. These are the papers telling you about the fine. This woman who says she is of the Northwoods coven, or whatever it is, told the board it is important that we do something about your lawn. The HOA could take action to take your house away from you if you don’t clear this up. I really need to be going” Steve said and handed Gretchen a paper detailing how they could take her house away if she had brown patches and weeds for more than three months.
Just then a truck pulled up that said “Animal Control” on it. A man got out and told her he had an order to pick up her dog. He had Gretchen’s dog on a leash near the truck.
” Pete! What are you doing with my dog? Don’t you remember me? We worked at the Badger Brew in college” Gretchen said.
“Its you! Gretchen! It has been a long time hasn’t it?” Pete said.
“Yes it has. We went to the lake together so many times that summer. How can you take my dog?” Gretchen asked.
“I have orders Gretchen. It was reported to us that he bit a neighbor. They don’t think it is safe to have the dog around people” Pete said.
“You are kidding me Pete, aren’t you?” Gretchen said. “There is no way my dog would harm anyone.”
Pete already had the dog and was walking him into the back of the truck.
Gretchen sat down and cried. She was in a nightmare. Old boyfriends were coming back to haunt her. She had wanted to make her ex-husband suffer but she felt she was the one cursed by an evil spell.
She ate some of the candy she had purchased for Halloween. A bloody arm started crawling across the floor and she started to scream. Then she realized it was one of her kids playing a joke on her and laughed. It started to rain and she could hear lightning. The power went out. She got on the phone with the power company and saw the shadow of a man outside the window. There was a knock at the door. When she got to the door she found it was her ex-husband Tyler.
Gretchen opened the door to see her ex-husband standing next to the witch she met at Shopko.
“Trick or Treat” Tyler said. “I wanted you to meet my new girlfriend Vanessa.”
