About the authors:
Chad and Jad decided to start this website over a conversation on the recent defeat of Brock Lesnar. Chad was Jad’s 5th grade teacher in 2003. They have since remained in contact, and share common interests in MMA, among many other topics. In that conversation, Jad told Chad he should be a sportswriter, and Chad expressed how he was interested in the idea. Jad had experience in building websites, and he threw the idea out there. What you will be viewing from this day for is the product of that random conversation between a teacher and a former student that have managed through the years to build a friendship.
Chad Barrows- Chad Barrows, staff writer for mmanews247.com, is a middle school science teacher, and a former football and wrestling coach. He dabbles in journalism and MMA in his spare time. Recently he decided to mix the two hobbies and begin writing for mmanews247.com. Chad has been involved in MMA since well before it was ever a mainstream sport. He first saw Royce Gracie dominate in the first two UFC tournaments, in 1995. He immediately fell in love with the discipline. It took another year to find someplace to learn Gracie jiu-jitsu. However, the wait was worth it. As it would turn out, that little attic above the taekwando studio is also where Rich Franklin was getting his first jiu-jitsu instruction. Both were learning from a Gracie blue belt who had been given a charter to instruct by Royce and Rorion Gracie. They rolled in the same sessions when Royce came to visit and work with the group.
After about a year, Chad decided to move to Florida for a change of pace. He spent time going from jiu-jitsu academy to jiu-jitsu academy. Money was tight, so aside from the occasional free lesson at the numerous academies in South Florida, and jiu-jitsu practitioners he would bump into, rolling in the empty spaces of gyms jiu-jitsu was put on the back burner for years. He stayed a rabid fan of Mixed Martial arts though.
Five years later, and with a degree in education, Chad spent a summer on Martha’s Vineyard. While working out at a gym on the Vineyard, Chad noticed a rather large population of Brazilians for such a sparsely populated island. One evening he noticed a collection of men in jiu-jitsu gi’s in the cardio studio. Here he met a brown belt that went by the name, Roderigo. He trained with this group for a couple months until he moved back to Ohio.
Upon making this move, Chad landed in Dayton Ohio in 2002. After a year couple years there, he learned how much MMA had grown in Ohio since he left. He rolled with amateurs in a Bally’s gym he joined. It wasn’t until he started a new teaching job in Miamisburg that he met the best fighters he would ever work with (2007). It was a small group of wrestlers flying under the radar of several big organized teams in the area. The guys Chad started training with were (and still are) beating all these guys from the commercialized MMA teams. After some time, Chad, having aged quite a bit from the 23 year-old jiu-jitsu fan in 1995, got opportunities to work as training partner and cornerman to the fighters in the group.
In the Spring of 2010 Chad got married and has since moved to Chillicothe, Ohio, keeping undefeated cornerman, and amateur championship winning record in-tact. He keeps in touch with his former training partners. However with the distance between them he built his own home MMA gym in his basement, and is currently training guys looking to compete in the future, as well as casual MMA fans looking for exercise and a better understanding of the fight game.
Jad Mubaslat- Jad is currently 18 years old and still attending high school. He has had two years of training experience including two amateur boxing bouts, sanctioned by USA Boxing. He currently trains at Jorge Gurgel Mixed Martial Arts Academy. Jad is also involved in swimming, football and lifting, giving him considerable knowledge in physical training and staying active. He aspires to go to the Ohio State University to earn his M.D. later in life and hopes to stay active in MMA training throughout. Before he graduates, Jad is hoping to have at least one cage fight.
