Since 1983, November has been designated as National Alzheimer’s Awareness month. The Mountain View Senior Center Advisory Committee hopes to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s and its symptoms by holding two special workshops on November 16 at the Mountain View Senior Center, 266 Escula Avenue.
Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia and more than 5 million American’s have the disease which affects a person’s memory, behavior, and thinking and gets worse over time. The Senior Center will have memory/behavioral screenings conducted by Gerontology Specialist, Elna Tymes. Residents can pick from one of five appointment time slots between 1:15 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Those who care for those with Alzheimer’s or other caregivers are invited to attend a Communicating with Cognitively Impaired Persons workshop. The one hour workshop will give caregivers tips about how to interact with people who are confused. Professionals from the Senior Health Care Advisory will be on hand to answer any questions following the workshop.
