About the Rainbow Fish
Rainbow fish kindergarten activities are fun and an interesting way to learn about this unique species of fish. Found in the southern hemisphere, rainbow fish are schooling fish that are commonly found in groups of at least six. These fish are known for their shimmery scales, as well as their appearance in the award-winning children’s book, “The Rainbow Fish”, drawn and written by Marcus Pfister. Rainbow fish are peaceful, and therefore can be kept in community tanks. Enjoy the topic of rainbow fish with your children or classroom with the following kindergarten activities.
Coffee Filter Rainbow Fish
To create a coffee filter rainbow fish, flatten out a clean coffee filter onto a hard surface. Using various colors of markers, fill in the coffee filter. Next, use a spray bottle to squirt the coffee filter to create a tie-dye type mix of colors. Allow the project to dry for an hour or two, or use a blow dryer on low heat for approximately five minutes. Once the coffee filter has dried, cut out a fish shape. Use a piece of tinfoil to cut out small triangles for scales and paste to the body of the fish. Glue on a wiggly eye and use a marker to draw a smiley mouth. Optional: Crumple up plastic cling wrap and glue the outside borders to a blue piece of paper. Glue your rainbow fish to the blue paper to make the fish appear as its swimming in the ocean.
3D Rainbow Fish
Kindergarten students will love creating a 3D rainbow fish of many colors. For this project, you will need to create two matching fish patterns. Two exact fish can be created by folding a piece of colored construction paper in half, then cutting out the fish to leave you with two side views of your rainbow fish. Next, overlap the two fish templates. Glue the two faces together and then the two tailfins together. Use markers and small pieces of construction paper to add a face and colored scales. Finally, blow up a small balloon and place it between the two fish patterns to create a 3D rainbow fish.
Balloon Rainbow Fish
When looking for rainbow fish kindergarten activities, this craft is a real kid-favorite. Begin by blowing up a colored balloon of your choice. Using a marker, draw on the eyes and scales on a piece of colored construction paper and cut them out. The scales should be ten to twenty quarter-size circles of different colors. Glue these pieces onto the balloon with the circles overlapping one another to create scales. Draw on the mouth using a marker. Next, draw and cut out fins for the top, bottom, and tale of the fish. Draw lines on the fins to make the fish appear as its swimming. Optional: Tie a fishing line around the top fin and hang your project from the ceiling.
If you are in need of some great fish activities for your kindergarten class, the crafts mentioned above are age-appropriate and will keep your kids attention.
