I have kept an ongoing blog tracking Adam Lambert’s album and single sales. It is, to say the least, frustrating. RCA is not forthcoming and except for international certifications for Gold and Platinum international sales are a mystery. The reason that I see the numbers as important is that they sway popular perception. While Adam Lambert is on the trajectory to become an International Star, many times writers have remarked about Lambert’s lack of a Platinum album when internationally Lambert has sold well over a million copies of For Your Entertainment. Just in my own documentations I am absolutely certain that I can verify that combining the album and singles Adam has sold 4,727,914 units that I have been able to track . Kolbalt announced that Lambert has sold 1,2 million albums and 4.2 million singles. Combing single and album sales Lambert has sold 5.4 million units. It is good news that Adam Lambert signed a worldwide administration deal with Kobalt Music Group to track his sales and insure that he receives royalties so that sales numbers will be accurate and available.
Kobalt’s Press Release:
“Lambert, who was the runner up on American Idol’s 8th season, has emerged as a global star. His debut album reached No. 3 on The Billboard 200 albums chart and has sold more than 750,000 copies in the U.S. with the hit singles “Whataya Want From Me,”‘ “For Your Entertainment” and “If I Had You.” The album has sold over 1.2 million units worldwide and also went Top 10 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Greece and Finland plus reached No. 16 in Germany. In the U.S. Lambert has sold nearly 3 million digital single downloads. All singles tracks combined from the album have sold 4.2 million units worldwide.”
Kobalt’s press release adds to the sales we were able to track:
FYE Album, US and certified international sales = 980,958
FYE Japan – Oricon sales chart = 29,325
FYE Single US and certified international sales = 438,500
WWFM US and certified international sales = 2,253,320
IIHY US and certified international sales = 881,657
TFM US and certified international sales = 124,000
Acoustic Live = 20,154
Total = 4,727,914
Thank You Kobalt, we are glad you are on Adam’s team!
My Ongoing Album and Single Sales Blog
There does not seem to be a source for sales information. My intention with this article was to become the source of information that we can share in a format that is easy to understand. Please advise me of any other sales or certifications that can be documented and I will update the numbers.
When I heard that Adam was Gold in Singapore or Platinum in Australia I did not know what that meant. Here are the amounts and the countries that have certified Gold and Platinum For Your Entertainment sales and what that means in quantity. As you can see it differs country to country.
Gold / Platinum
Australia 35,000 / 70,000
Canada 40,000 / 80,000
Denmark 7,500 / 15,000
Finland 10,000 / 20,000
Germany 100,000 / 200,000
Malaysia 7,500 / 15,000
New Zealand 7,500 / 15,000
Singapore 5,000 / 10,000
Sweden 20,000 / 40,000
Switzerland 15,000 / 30,000
UK* 100,000 / 300,000
US 500,000 / 1,000,000
Adam Lambert has either Platinum or Gold status for his album or singles in ten countries now.
*Neither Adam Lambert’s album nor his singles have been certified Platinum or Gold in the UK but I posted these numbers to show that the requirements are higher in the UK than in many other places. I recently received a twitter that said according to UK Sony that about 44,000 albums have sold in the UK. In the aftermath of the Glam Nation Tour I would not be surprised to see a UK certification.
When you look at Adam Lambert’s Gold and Platinum certifications you can see the number of known sales around the world.
Lets Add Up The Numbers
We know that the album, For Your Entertainment went Gold in the US in January of 2010. The currant US sales amount is 788,458. As Cookiebr8 pointed out in “calculating sales is that not all retailers here in the US report to Soundscan. I have read somewhere that one should take approximately ten percent of the reported amount sold and add that number to the reported amount to account for total sales. That would give Adam at least another 78,845 albums or so to the current total.” That total would be about 867,393 US sales. It would be higher if they were reporting the amount shipped compared to the amount sold.
For Your Entertainment – Album
United Sates Gold and heading to Platinum 788,458 + 10% unreported 78,845 total 867,393 as of January, 2011
Canada Platinum 80,000 March – 2010
Singapore Platinum 10,000 September – 2010
New Zealand Platinum 15,000 May -2010
Finland Gold 10,000 August – 2010
Australia Platinum 70,000 January – 2011
Malaysia Gold 7,500 November 2010
Certified International Sales = 192,500
The total sales we can document are 980,958 from US sales and international certifications plus approximately 78,845 unreported sales for a total of 1,059,803. There must be thousands and thousands more. Back in September of 2010 Lambert’s official fan site hosted by RCA announced that Lambert had sold over a million albums worldwide but for the most part RCA has not been cooperative to fans that are interested in determining Adam’s worldwide sales. In fact as pointed out by Cookiebr8 RCA has done their best to obscure Adam’s success.
Platinum sales can be reached by counting the amount of albums SHIPPED MINUS RETURNS…that is how it is written in the RIAA website. Lots of people have been certified as platinum that have not actually SOLD one million. If they wanted to, RCA could apply for platinum status for FYE and get it. When asked about this long ago, I remember the mod here, Ed, saying that they would hold the album to a higher standard, meaning that they aren’t going to apply for platinum certification based on amounts shipped.
If Cookiebar8 is correct why is RCA using a higher standard for Adam than RIAA requires? What standard do they use with other artist? Just how many Adam Lambert albums have been shipped in the US? Has it been over a million? If Adam reached 1,000,000 album sales internationally in July, 2010 and we are at the end of January, 2011 I would like to know the total of Adam’s international sales now. Shouldn’t RCA answer these questions?
Adding Up The Single Sales
In the US Adam has confirmed sales of 2,677,000 singles as posted at AdamLambertTVblogspot.com
For Your Entertainment – Single
This single was never promoted by RCA after Lambert’s AMA performance controversy but still reached Platinum and Gold status in two countries. The last available data for FYE is that it ended 2010 with total sales of 351,000 singles sold in the US.
Canada Platinum 80,000 March – 2010
New Zealand Gold 7,500 March – 2010
We know from these numbers that the FYE single has sold well over 438,500 copies.
If I Had You – Single
As of January, 2011 If I Had You sold 733,985 singles in the US.
Australia 2 X Platinum 140,472 November – 2010
New Zealand Gold 7,500
Known international sales = 167,672
We have 881,657 known sales for If I had You.
Whataya Want From Me – Single
There are 1,641,340 US sales for Whataya Want From Me as of January 2011
Plus Remixes of 14,480 = 1,655,820
US Platinum in October 2010 and as of January = 1,655,820
Canada 4 X Platinum 320,000 March – 2010
New Zealand Platinum 15,000 August -2010
Australia 2 X Platinum 140,000 November – 2010
Denmark Gold 7,500 units: July 2010
Germany Gold 100,000 November – 2010
Sweden Gild 20,000 December – 2010
Switzerland Gold 15,000 November – 2010
International Certified sales = 597,500
We know that WWFM has sold 2,273,320 certified singles worldwide and many more that we cannot yet document.
Update! As of July 2010 the World Charts show that over 3 million WWFM singles have been sold. I will work on determining where the sales occurred.
Time For Miracles – Single
124,000 as of August 2010 have been sold in the US. More have been sold internationally but I have been unable to find the numbers.
Take One – Album
Adam Lambert’s unauthorized album, Take One, has sold between 40 and 50 thousand copies according to True Hollywood Story. The reason I mention it is not to promote it but to point out that these sales are not mentioned and accounted for in the ranking of American Idol Alumni. The site ranks contestants according to album sales. Lambert’s international sales are not being counted even though there is nothing stated in the criteria of the site that suggest why they are not counted. There is no real reason why these US sales should be ignored. In the US Lambert’s 788,458 sales of For Your Entertainment plus the Take One sales add up to at least 828,458 in sales. Lets look at the numbers.
Update! Adam has passed Josh Gracin!
11. Jennifer Hudson 798,000
12. Adam Lambert is listed at 788,458
13. Josh Gracin 787,000
14. Taylor Hicks 760,400
Authorized or unauthorized Take One sales are still legal sales and would move Lambert up past Jennifer Hudson. If Lambert deserves the higher ranking it should be acknowledged.
