Asian countries are increasingly finding their place in the sun; globalization has given them the canvas to showcase their talents, way beyond their shores. In fact, the unleashing of their pent-up energies is felt far & wide across the globe; the existing bastions are under threat, not only from Chinese behemoths backed by trillions of reserves. What that entails cannot be predicted in entirety for now. The Asian renaissance can be described as a sea-change and even a tsunami sweeping across many lands!
But globalization does not mean the new found opportunities are being grabbed queuing-up patiently! There is a mad scramble for the spoils, starting with getting the best in education. But some basic truths cannot be hidden; the predatory instincts to get ahead and race away with the spoils. An example is China, which wants to outdo all others in every field; not only as a world factory to mass-produce goods, but also in outsourcing of services, sports, arts etc. It looks like America & Europe have to wait for the calm after the storm to pick-up the pieces, as none can continuously run without taking the needed breath; the burn-out factor will come into play for others to catch-up, hopefully!
Within Asian families, there is another unique trait known as, “afraid to lose” to others. Simply put, the purported “loss of face” in daily lives due to others getting ahead; this could be an extension of obsession to win at all costs! No harm, but even toddlers and children are used as tools with the enormous pressure on them to be the best to satisfy the ego of their parents. This driven society has upset traditional family values of contentment, accepting reverses with equanimity and finding meaning in any pursuits that come by.
Families are uprooted to wherever the opportunities are; they even get divided as the bread-winner goes alone leaving others back at home. The mad rush makes even mothers leave infants with relatives for years and returning as strangers! It is too late when they find their off-springs find solace in others’ companies or even acquire habits that ruin their blossoming lives. The end result is heart-breaking, despite few making it from poverty to great success.
One negative fall-out of this trend is break-up of joint families to pursue selfish interests, unwilling to help others in need, or share in the success. All are treated as competitors; no more traditional bonding that glued the society as one to face common challenges, with time to spare to look-out for others in need! The sharing and caring nature, necessary for common well-being, has been replaced with a race without an end! Globalization means there are no limits; the earlier hills have been replaced with mountains!
The change in values affects the children whose childhood has been rudely snatched away and robbed from the cradle even. They are treated as robots without feelings; like animals having to flee from their predators from birth even. Will we be breeding a new species, devoid of emotions and empathy that was the backbone in societies, as many went out of their way to accommodate others’ needs? The egalitarian western societies have evolved with safety nets in place, though under threat increasingly.
The sad turn in the mindless pursuit for success cannot be reined-in by anyone as none wants to be left behind. Even climate change accord gets bogged down as everyone wants to enjoy the nature’s bounty, whatever it takes! Increasingly, we find the deleterious effects on society, with few winners in the game. The accolades & victories go to few, with the rest left bruised, monetarily and psychologically. The glitz of city life attracts all like flies to honey; even those who have no passion for the city jobs. Yes, it has become an all-out consuming passion and the herd-mentality shows no sign of easing. The society as a whole seems to be paying a heavy price, with none in a position to bell the cat! The pendulum has to swing eventually for societies to survive!
