It seems that many of us are interested in the upcoming release of Age of Conan (AoC) and the world of Hyboria. Before you immerse yourself in the world of Robert E. Howard there are a few things that should be considered.
Age of Conan is touted as a “mature” world. One in which the content will be delivered in a violent way. What does that mean exactly? According to the official website Age of Conan will be the first MMO to have a mature rating. The developer intends to create truly bloody and brutal battles. The further describe the world of Conan as sexy. If you have read the books and viewed the movies you have an idea of what that means. This is something that you may want to take into consideration if you plan to purchase the game for younger family members.
Funcom, the game developer says that real-time combat is one of the core features for AoC. Other games that have depended on real-time combat have been rather disappointing to me. All of those games liked to say that it took skill to defeat an enemy. Personally all I discovered playing them was the player with the fastest connection wins.
Another thing to be taken into consideration is the PvP based direction of the game. While it is said that AoC has a wealth of PvE play, PvP battles and bar fights are in store. Does this mean that you will be forced to engage in PvP?
From reading the FAQ about the game I understand that players can purchase land and build cities. The same FAQ also says that cities draw the eye of natives who are apt to besiege them. In later stages of the game players will be involved in turf wars and must conquer or be conquered.
AoC while it seems interesting has many points that you might really want consider before running off and purchasing the game. If you must actively defend your city then you are looking at a major time commitment. Not something for the casual gamer. Real-time combat could be fun … if you are a first person shooter fan. Last but not least no targeting system will pose a problem. In AoC you must actively aim weapons and spells. Try that from horseback.
Real-time combat, no targeting system, PvP game direction, and a massive time sink. Those are the finer points of AoC. Is it the game in your future?
