The AKC (American Kennel Club) has announced the annual list of the top ten most popular dog breeds in the U.S. Could one of these breeds be your new best friend? Read on to found out!
10. Shih Tzu:
Luxurious long hair would be the first thing that comes to mind when a person thinks about this breed. The Shih Tzu was bred intentionally for the purpose of being a human companion. They are normally very friendly and open to everyone they meet. They have a low exercise requirement and are a nice little house pet that everyone in the family can enjoy.
Cute and curly! These dogs are fun loving and come in three sizes. Toy, Miniature, Standard and a multitude of colors! The diversity of grooming styles that one could make with this breed are endless. Not to mention, they are hypoallergenic non-shedding perfect for those with allergies. Making them fun to own and show! Their high energy and friendly personality make them great family pets! They excel in all actives such as hunting and agility!
The Dachshund come in two sizes. Standard and Miniature. They have a wide color range from solids to tri-color and everything in between, including the popular and beautiful dapple! Dachshunds come in three hair types. Wirehair, Smooth and Long hair. They love to dig and run around. However, they have very sensitive backs, making it hard and potentially dangerous for jumping onto and off of curbs, stairs, furniture and beds.
A face only a mother could love, right? No way! These dogs are lovable and adorable! Bulldogs make great family pets as they tend to grow strong bonds with their owners and children. Their short noses to pose a risk to over heating when it’s warm outside!
The honorable companion. These dogs are very affectionate and needy of their humans. Bonding easily with children make them a good family dog. They are protective and will alert if danger is present. This breed has low grooming needs, but very high exercise requirement.
Curious, mischievous and down right cute as a button! That describes the Beagle. Beagles are very good family pets and enjoy the company of people as well as other dogs. They have high energy needs as they are a hunting breed. If not properly exercised they could potentially run off, following their nose far away from home!
4. Golden Retriever:
The Golden Retriever is another breed loved by many families across the globe. This high energy breed needs exercise to be happy. Bred to hunt and retrieve these dogs naturally love to have jobs, and can be easy to train. Long hair means higher grooming needs. A daily brushing is needed to keep the coat free from tangles and mats.
3. Yorkshire Terrier:
Nearly at the top of the list is the ultra elegant Yorkshire Terrier, also known by it’s fans as simply a Yorkie. The very long hair needs constant grooming and brushing to stay at it’s finest. Some people find it’s easier to give them a short cut groom. This makes it easier to control the amount of grooming that is needed. A very fun and energetic dog in a small body!
2. German Shepherd:
The German Shepherd is best recognized as the choice police and guard dogs. This breed is very protective of it’s family and devoted to their safety. This breed requires daily grooming to keep its coat from heavy shedding and mats. The GSD as he is also known, is a wonderful dog. It’s no wonder he is number two in our count down.
1. Labrador Retriever:
The Labrador is a big clown. His happy go lucky, goofy personality will keep you entertained for hours. This breed needs daily brushing to reduce shedding, also to keep it in top water resistant form. The lab loves water, and will enjoy a trip to the lake or the beach. This breed is so popular that it’s been in the number one spot for 18 consecutive years!
